Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The beauty of the nightlife is that it is centrally located and inclusive at New College. Exclusive parties are rare. Most gatherings are advertised on the forum. Student-sponsored Walls are open to all and hosted right in the heart of campus, Palm Court. Those who throw the Walls collect money door-to-door for supplies such as decorations, food, and beverages. While townies and Ringling School of the Arts students sometimes attend, Walls are a testament to the unity of New College social life. Police and RAs are always on duty to help. Few other colleges can boast such a student-centered, free, and consistent form of entertainment open to all. Walls are New College. Without them, the crux of its extracurricular culture would collapse.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much beyond these dance parties. While this is hardly a complaint of Novo Collegians, students might like more options. Sarasota isn’t geared toward young people. One’s best bet is Tampa for the club scene. Novo Collegians study five days a week and party during the weekend. Most don’t bother with making the trip when there is a guaranteed dance party in their backyard. Free, safe, fun, reliable, and creative: quintessentially Novo Collegian.

Not Bad for a Retirement Community

There really isn't much to do off campus after 8 PM for the 21 and under crowd, and public transportation after these hours is nonexistent. Walls are a reliable option on weekend nights; depending on your persuasion, they might be anything from a religious commitment to a severe annoyance for you. My advice is to settle in with a group of 3-10 like-minded alcoholics so that you have someone to share your boredom with when the time comes.

Center of the Universe

Most of the partying takes place in Palm Court, aka. "the center of the Universe". Every Friday and Saturday night there is a "Wall" (dance party" that currently runs from 10pm to 2am. 3 times a year there's a much larger, planned out Palm Court Party. If that's not your scene, there are plenty of ways to hang out and party with friends.

Excellent!

There are walls every Friday and Saturday night. They are the core of weekend nightlife on campus and can draw an 1/8th of the enrolled student body in a night fairly easily. There are small parties most nights on campus.

Off campus there are a few bars but if you want a club/concert scene you have to go to Saint Pete/Tampa. As bad as it sounds the nightlife on campus is actually pretty good.

McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre

McCurdy’s is an 18-and-up comedy club located on Tamiami Trail. Aside from seeing some of the best comics around, check out the Humor Institute located at McCurdy’s and take a class on stand up comedy, improvisation, or performance writing.

Big E’s Sweets & Gourmet Coffee

Big E’s has extremely inexpensive food. I’m talking less than $3.50 for an entire sandwich, full of veggies. Coffee, smoothies, Italian sodas, teas, and sweets are also a bargain.
