Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

New College sometimes makes students forget that most people have the misfortune of having to drive to parties—the nightlife is centrally located on NCF's campus, steps away from where many students live. Exclusive, invitation-only gatherings are virtually nonexistent, and inclusion is a big component of the atmosphere. Most gatherings are advertised on the Forum. Student-sponsored "walls" are open to all and hosted right in the "Center of the Universe"—Palm Court. Those who sponsor "the walls" collect money door-to-door for supplies such as decorations, food, and beverages. "Walls" range from being sparsely attended to jam-packed. Attendance mostly depends on the time of year, playlist, or theme. On occasion, "townies" (local residents) or Ringling students attend, but "walls" are true testaments to the cohesion of NCF social life. Campus police and student patrol members are always on duty to provide a safe environment. Few other campuses can boast such a student-centered, free, and consistent form of entertainment open to all. Without them, the essence of campus extracurricular culture would face peril.

Unfortunately, there usually aren't many options beyond these dance parties. "Walls" can become boring quickly if you are expecting a nightlife scene that varies tremendously from one weekend to the next. Students are basically content with what campus has to offer, but there would not be any complaints if there were more options. Sarasota is not geared toward young people. Tampa is a solid option for a club and bar scene, and is about an hour away. Because of the arduous academic program, most students have limited time and energy to search out variant options. Many forgo making the trek when there is a guaranteed dance party in their backyard. Free, safe, fun, reliable, and creative: quintessentially New College.

Can't Expect Much from Such a Small School, but Pcps and Walls Okay

There's not a lot in the area since we are so close to the airport and Sarasota is a retirement community. Nightlife is bad for college students, as this is not your typical college town. There's a lot to do but not at night.

NCF students throw their own parties called Walls and a couple times of year bigger parties (that outsiders come to) happen, these are called PCPs. Lots of all-night dining and drug use (for which NCF is known) but the cops are pretty cool about it, they know the NCF students keep it under control, it's the outsiders who go crazy.

Not Bad for a Retirement Community

There really isn't much to do off campus after 8 PM for the 21 and under crowd, and public transportation after these hours is nonexistent. Walls are a reliable option on weekend nights; depending on your persuasion, they might be anything from a religious commitment to a severe annoyance for you. My advice is to settle in with a group of 3-10 like-minded alcoholics so that you have someone to share your boredom with when the time comes.

Center of the Universe

Most of the partying takes place in Palm Court, aka. "the center of the Universe". Every Friday and Saturday night there is a "Wall" (dance party" that currently runs from 10pm to 2am. 3 times a year there's a much larger, planned out Palm Court Party. If that's not your scene, there are plenty of ways to hang out and party with friends.
