Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Like most Floridian suburbs, Sarasota is sprawled. The public transportation is inefficient and seldom used by students. Students without cars tend to not get out very often. There is a bus system that New College students have free access to with their student IDs, though. Students often take the bus to get to Sarasota's main downtown area. Many use this system as a last resort, as it is often slow and not always incredibly reliable. Fortunately, for those who do have cars, New College is located close to many useful destinations. It is right on the main artery, US Route 41 Tamiami Trail, which includes most of what Sarasota and Bradenton have to offer.

Thanks to a reliable forum, students who lack a means of transportation promptly find rides whenever they need them. These offers range from trips to the supermarket to last-minute rides to Miami. Both of these scenarios happen on a regular basis. Unlike many other colleges, first-years are permitted to bring their cars to campus, which increases the likelihood of finding a ride.

Pretty Bad, but at Least We Get Free Access to the Bus

If you want to get off-campus, plan hours ahead to take the bus because it doesn't come very often. Otherwise you'll have to take a bike or a car because the only places to go within walking distance are a shady gas station, the airport and Subway.

Good Stuff

800 students makes transportation easy. No problems finding parking spots. It's a tiny campus so if you live on campus, the most you'll walk to a class is 15 minutes anyway. Buses around Sarasota are free.

Mixed Reviews

As an out-of stater, New College offers some upsides and downsides. Sarasota airport is right next door. But not much else is. Everybody has a car, so it's not that hard to find a ride somewhere. The buses have been largely ignored by students, but they're now free, so that should change soon. Downtown Sarasota is 5 miles away and easily bikeable.
