Comparable Schools' Weather Grades:
College Prowler Take
The reason so many people choose Sarasota as their retirement and vacation destination is typically the impeccable weather. With breezy mornings, spectacular sunsets, and no snow, Sarasota does little to disappoint. While some prefer seeing the seasons change, others appreciate the fact that they can wear short sleeves in the winter. Because Sarasota is in South Florida, however, it is subject to hurricanes. Fortunately, the administration is well prepared to deal with such natural disasters should they ever come. It is not uncommon for classes to be cancelled because of storm warnings. Sudakoff Center on campus is an official storm shelter that is used to house students if ever necessary. Hurricane warnings are a part of the Florida lifestyle, and Novo Collegians are used to it. It’s nice to be able to go to the beach whenever one feels like it. It’s nicer to never have to deal with plowing snow and turning on the heater. What isn’t nice is the fact that it can be brutally hot in the late spring. But with sun block, short sleeves, and endurance, Sarasota can be the paradise it is reputed to be.

There is no predicting New College...
There is no predicting New College weather, as I found to my chagrin when I was trying to direct a play outdoors in January. There’s a drought every once in a while. Sometimes there are rainy periods. Generally, the first month or two of school is the rainiest time. It creates these puddles that are more like lakes. Snowbirds come here a lot. You should have a warm blanket and a good coat in your stash because you will get used to the warm weather, and then all of a sudden there will be a cold day, and your blood will be thin. |

Summers are ridiculous. Sarasota...
Summers are ridiculous. Sarasota has got the weirdest weather. It’s worse than Miami, probably because we get a Gulf Coast breeze instead of an Atlantic one. You can’t walk from your room to Ham Center without being drenched in sweat in the summertime. When it’s hot, it’s hot. When it’s humid, it’s humid. The wintertime is nice—it’s not biting or anything. I like hurricane season, but it’s a pain because sometimes we need to evacuate our rooms. |

I don’t like the hurricanes. I don’t like the heat during move-in. It is stressful to be scared, sweaty, and smelly while you’re worried if anyone is going to like you. Later in the school year, it’s very nice. |

Coming from New York, I didn’t...
Coming from New York, I didn’t think the weather was going to have as much of an influence on me as it has. People socialize outdoors. People walk places. People open their windows for fresh air. Sometimes it’s too hot and unbearable, but it doesn’t hinder anything, and it facilitates more opportunities. |

It’s nice most of the year. I prefer warm, sunny days. There is a lot of evidence suggesting that colder, darker places in the Northeast have negative effects on people’s moods. Sometimes it will be unbearably hot for some people, but I’ve lived in Florida my entire life, so I can handle it. |
