College Prowler Take
If you ask an NYU student about the school’s sports, nine out of ten will laugh and say, “What sports?” The fact is, you’re more likely to find kids rehearsing a theatrical scene or playing guitar than tossing a football. Students all seem to agree that sports are not a big presence at NYU. The teams do their best to advertise and conjure some school spirit, but with fencing and no football team, cheering crowds just aren’t happening. Since there really is no campus and sports take place in venues all over the city (and even in New Jersey), sports happen on the fringe of student life rather than at the center.

Varsity sports aren't a huge deal at NYU because we are Division III, but the school puts on Tear It Up games that offer free T-shirts and food for the students who attend the games. We have nice gyms and athletic areas. Intramural sports are a great way to get involved since anyone who wants to can play.

Varsity athletics are as big as you could want them to be, but I think we’re a Division III school, whichever one that sucks the most. IM sports are kind of small, I think; I’ve never seen or participated in one. There are tons of options if you want to take advantage of them. |

I’m not sure about sports. I went to a hockey game once. It was pretty cool. I’m not a big sports guy, so I don’t know. |

Sports don’t play a big role in school life. We don’t have a football team or a stadium for games. We have a gym with a basketball court and a pool where most of the games are played. There is also Chelsea Piers, where other sports are played such as ice hockey. |

Fencing is NYU’s only D1 sport. I’m assuming there’s a good following. I went to most of the men’s basketball team’s home games, which weren’t highly attended. NYU doesn’t seem to have much school spirit. My guess: it’s because we have no football team! |

Gyms and Facilities
- Chelsea Piers - Chelsea Piers is an 80,000 square-foot athletics facility with two indoor playing fields built for soccer and lacrosse, an ice skating rink, a rock-climbing wall, batting cages, outdoor golf driving range, and much more. This public facility is open to all NYU students, but it is often very crowded with families.
- Coles Sports and Recreation Center - Coles is the larger of the two gyms at NYU. This multipurpose field house/arena houses five courts for basketball, volleyball, tennis; a roof with a 1/6 mile, three-lane running track plus six tennis courts; a natatorium with an NCAA-regulation, 25-meter swimming pool, and a weight room, to name some key points. The weight room at Coles is always very hot and crowded, and the weights are pretty old. The aerobic room is severely lacking, with only three treadmills and a handful of elliptical trainers and Stairmasters. The rooftop track is cool, though, especially when the weather is nice.
- Palladium Athletic Facility - The Palladium Athletic Facility was opened in September 2003. It has many cardio machines, including treadmills, elliptical trainers, and exercycles, all of which have personal headphone consoles that receive sound from 18 televisions. There is a swimming pool, a climbing wall, a room for cycling class and a multi-purpose gym. The weight room has Fit Linxx technology, which lets people keep track of their individual fitness programs. Palladium is by far the superior gym, but it is often very crowded, especially during the late afternoon and evening. The best time to go is in the morning and early in the day on weekends when everybody is still getting over their hangovers.

Getting Tickets
In the world of NYU sports, they just want you to be there and cheer, so tickets are either free or nonexistent.

Best Place to Take a Walk
New York City’s famous Central Park is perfect for walking, running, biking, or rollerblading, especially in the fall and spring months when the foliage is breathtaking (and these are probably some of the only trees you will see in large groups in the city). Van Cortlandt State Park is another option, with plenty of wooded trails and hills for running.
