Computer service at NYU is outstanding, but bringing a laptop to NYU is definitely the way to go, or at least, it is highly recommended. With nearly 44,000 students, things can get a little tricky. The best part about NYU Information Technology Services (ITS) computer labs is the unlimited free printing. The worst part about NYU ITS computer labs is that the unlimited free printing privilege comes with a price; because of long lines, you can end up waiting for about 10 minutes to print two pages. Despite the occasional 5- to 10-minute wait to get a computer at any of the labs, once you are seated with a computer, you can spend the whole day there. NYU is also a Mac- and PC-friendly school; thus, there are labs for each, as well as some with both options. One of the nicest computer features is that there are computers in various locations—for instance, in the lobby in the Steinhardt Building and on the third floor in the Silver Center, although you cannot print from these computers.
With NYU's significant effort to go green, double-sided printing is highly recommended, but you may switch the option to whatever you prefer—just remember to crosscheck that the selection you want is highlighted. Unfortunately, none of the ITS labs are open 24 hours, but no worries; if you have a laptop, you can download the Pharos printing software on your computer, and with that, you can send print jobs to the outdoor printer, located in front of the West Fourth Street ITS lab. Even though the lab will be closed, the outdoor printer functions 24 hours.
