Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

No matter who you are or where you come from, there is a place for you at NYU. While it is true that most of the student body hails from New Jersey, Long Island, and LA, the student population represents an incredible range of cultures and backgrounds. The students at NYU do a great job of both enforcing and breaking stereotypes about race, gender, religion, and other categories. Students can choose to join one or several clubs based on their ethnicities and spend most of their time with people just like themselves, or they can opt to steer clear of organizations that are based on race and form their own circle of friends.

Being in New York City, NYU definitely represents the entire spectrum of types of people. While well-to-do white students may be the majority, there is some of everything. In its events, organizations, and academic programs, NYU gives all students the opportunity to move beyond their comfort zones, and meet new and different types of people. NYU is a great place to redefine yourself, and every day you see people all around you at various points in the process. Overall, you will find people of almost any race, religious belief, etc.; thus, NYU is often a very accommodating community.

Incredibly Diverse

Students come from nearly every country on the globe and what seems like every state of America. I'm from the Northeast of the US but many of my friends are from California, one is from Turkey, another is from China, quite a few from England as well.

Diverse but Not What You Think

NYU is probably the only school in America which is accepting of just about anyone. The great thing about the school is that it covers just about every interest anyone could have, and once you find that environment, you will be set for your entire stay. There are people from all walks of life and it is a beautiful thing to behold. However there is a strong lack of African-American representation. The school probably gets its diversity numbers from all of the other races such as east asian and south east asian, but if you are black, don't be fooled by those numbers. There is a strong lack of African-American recruitment to begin with, and the school is expensive on top of that. So I feel that even if blacks do get in, they probably end up going to a school which offers a more comprehensive scholarship/financial aid package.

Facts

Gay Pride

NYU is full of LGBT and ally students. The University supports them well with an active LGBT center that works with other campus organizations to facilitate programs like Safe Zone training. LGBT students are involved in all aspects of NYU, from politics and business to theatre and sports, and the majority of the student body is open and accepting.

Political Activity

NYU students love to protest. Whether it's over war, hunger in a foreign country, or the University president's policies, NYU students will be there in Washington Square Park or in front of a campus building with signs and megaphones.

Economic Status

With tuition as high as NYU’s, quite a few students come from wealthy families, and those families support them generously while they study. Alongside a large affluent population, there are first generation college students and people putting themselves through school. NYU represents the whole range of socioeconomic possibilities, but the average student is upper-middle class.

Most Common Religions

In a city like New York, you can find any religion you can imagine. Most students on campus claim to be Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Hindu.

Minority Clubs on Campus

The minority clubs at NYU are proud organizations. From Afghan to Vietnamese and everything in between, there is a student group for every culture and country at NYU. Unlike high school, where people joined these clubs just to get in to college, all members genuinely want to be in the clubs.
