Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

NYU facilities are in and of the city, which means they are a mix of historic and cutting edge. Many buildings are just old, and consequently, many facilities aren’t perfect. They do, however, have that certain New York gritty-but-pretty charm. NYU is also finding money to renovate lots of buildings, including Third North residence hall, the journalism building, and the Gallatin building. In general, classrooms, common spaces, and especially elevators can be crowded—being surrounded by people is the NYU and NYC way of life.

Overall, NYU's school board has been making a significant effort to renovate old structures, and the school does a good job in terms of ensuring that facilities needed by students are readily available.

Good, but Crowded

The facilities can be a hit or miss at times, but by and large are well maintained and modern. However, it's a large university -- it's going to be crowded, especially during exams.

Not in New York City

They are good for what the space can hold. There are two athletic centers and comprehensive gyms. The pools are okay, but for the amount of students that attend NYU it doesn't seem like enough. Good effort but not perfect.

There is one main library, Bobst, but it is a great place, lots of great options, media, books, study spaces. Its a huge imposing building that makes studying less so. There are some other smaller libraries that are underrated but really beautiful, mostly at the grad centers.

All the facilities on campus are pretty great. We have two gyms which are very clean. The library is humongous. There are always activities happening on campus, in fact, too many to choose from!

Facts

"Green" Initiatives

NYU has a Sustainability Task Force made up of students, faculty, and administrators who work to improve the University's green practices. By 2017, the hope is for NYU to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent.

Favorite Things To Do

One of the greatest facilities NYU has to offer is the NYU Ticket Central, which has discounted student tickets to popular Broadway shows and even free movie screening passes. For those on an even tighter budget, there are always shows being put on by the Tisch drama students, with prices ranging anywhere from free to $15. The Violet Café is transformed into a coffeehouse on a regular basis and hosts open mic nights and student poetry readings. For physical fun, Coles and Palladium offer a variety of clubs and classes. The climbing wall at Palladium is a great way to change up your workout. Mostly, though, everyone’s favorite thing to do in between classes is grab a cup of coffee and find a bench in the park or a couch in a lounge and take a few minutes to catch up with friends. Being that NYU is centrally located in an urban area rich with culture, students are not limited to University activities.
