Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While the joke is that the “NYU girl” standard uniform is black leggings, a baggy shirt-dress, and a latte in hand, ladies at NYU represent every fashion genre and are an attractive bunch. Overall, NYU women navigate the city streets and social scenes with confidence and ease. Those NYU girls that choose to abandon the glamorous single life and all the benefits it affords them, like free entrance to clubs, often choose a partner outside of NYU. With a whole city of men to choose from, NYU ladies often date beyond the campus sphere.

The three main categories for NYU males are gay, jackass, and taken—in that order of likelihood. Many NYU girls complain that there are no straight guys at NYU, but the straight guys beg to differ. Many of them take advantage of the fact that the male-to-female ratio is in their favor, and most have no plans of settling in to a long-term relationship any time soon. The other half are happily committed and not tempted by the life of debauchery that they could easily have.

Heterosexual Ladies, Be Warned.

The stereotypes are true. NYU's girl/boy ratio is 60/40 and a good percentage of those boys are gay. Nothing wrong with that though, they make great friends! If you're looking for a significant other though, you can usually find someone who's pretty good looking and intelligent/interesting at school. If not, let's be real, you're living in New York City; go out and find someone.

New York Is Fashion Capital

NYU guys are very pretty. Not handsome, but pretty. They dress extremely stylishly, looking more like a city guy than a college student, which goes for most of the girls too. However, 9 times out of 10, if you meet an extremely well-dressed, pretty-looking boy, he will probably be gay or taken. NYU girls have the looks. I feel so bad about myself when I'm wearing sweats because so many NYU girls look so nice every day. Now as for personalities, generally, everyone is easily approachable and nice. I personally have never met an unlikable student on campus.

People People People

Students are usually well-dressed (males and females), but some people do pull out sweats or jeans-and-a-tee-combo. People are usually good-looking as well. There are mostly girls here, and a high percentage of the males are gay. It's NYC so no one should feel like they have limited options. Some people can be very snotty and some can be really sweet. You meet who you meet. Some people see snotty and are sweet, some people seem sweet and are snotty. When has this not been an issue in social environments? You can get into good clubs with 21 ids. And look good.

Facts

Social Scene

Pretty much every type of personality is represented at NYU, so once you become situated, it shouldn't be hard to find your own group. Once you've bypassed that initial obstacle, there are a lot of fun-loving partiers to be found at NYU. Or if you're more of the study group social butterfly, there are plenty of intellectuals to discuss theories with. In fact, many of the students at NYU love to hear themselves talk, so there is never a shortage of stimulating conversation.

Hookups or Relationships?

The girls at NYU often find themselves frustrated with the lack of straight guys, and thus, venture into the wilds of NYC or other universities to find a mate. Some are in relationships, but a lot of girls commiserate over the lack of guys and date around. Guys also tend to prefer dating or hookups to long-term relationships, although many girls say it seems that all the decent straight guys at NYU have girlfriends. For whatever reason, you won't find many couples in which both partners attend NYU.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

While NYU is by no means a big party school, students love to have a good time and let off some steam. The best bet for finding a guy or girl is to get out on the weekends. Local bars and clubs are full of potential hotties, NYU students and otherwise. Another option is available when the weather permits. Sitting out in Washington Square Park can be a rewarding experience for those searching for a mate. Students come here on their lunch breaks or between classes to study, read, play guitar, skateboard, and just chill out. Sometimes when the fountain is empty, shows put on by local performers draw crowds of guys and girls, proving to be great conversation starters.

Nope. Trust me—you can wear whatever you want. Really.
