Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

New York City is becoming increasingly safer—and as a result, so is NYU. At least one security guard is posted at the entrance of every NYU building to check IDs and control entrance, and dorms have security guards at the entrances 24 hours a day. Sometimes these guards can be cranky and pack an attitude—watching drunk college kids stumble home night after night isn’t the most fun job, after all—so being polite is the best way to play. Befriending them can be in your favor in expediting the guest sign-in policy. There is always an RA on-call in all NYU dorms and an effective emergency response system in place. Living in an NYU res hall may actually be the safest place to live in the city. Safe Ride vans are available for nighttime transport between NYU buildings, and non-NYU "green-light" buildings provide safe havens. With classes, nightlife, shopping, jobs, and endless other involvements to worry about, NYU students are rarely preoccupied with their safety.

In a place like New York City, tight security is a must. NYU is much safer than you might think, but in the end, you should always be careful. Don’t ever assume that you are completely safe just because you see a security guard around every corner of campus. You have to remember that you are in a big city where anything could happen, so take precautions accordingly. Always be aware of your surroundings and never walk around the city alone late at night. NYU Public Safety officers tend to patrol campus as it gets late, especially once it is dark, and whenever they are needed, they can be easily contacted by calling the number on the back of your NYU ID.

NYU Campus: Among the Safer Areas in NY

NYC is pretty dangerous and although NYU's campus can even barely be called one, I feel relatively safe when I am on campus. I have walked back to my dorm on 10th and 5th from the school library around 3 to 4 A.M on numerous occasions without feeling threatened for my life. There are also safe rides that gives you rides from school building to school building.

I do have concerns for theft. My friends have lost many valuables including iPhones, computers, etc from within their own dorm room.

Safe Environment

Security escortif needed late at night. Student ID to enter every building also serves as paycard for purchases. No need to carry cash checks or bankcards. Also works in surrounding businesses and resturants.

As Safe as You Could Be in a City

NYU's environment was very safe. The buildings were secure and the area around washington square park was quite safe, even at night. There were always people around so I never felt like I could be victimized and not have anyone know it. However being a city campus there were the occasional unavoidable encounters with crime. I feel those instances had more to do with being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I for one was never a victim of crime during my tenure at the school.
