Quick Stats

School Slang
  • A/CDE: Assistant/community development educators, those who run the residence halls
  • Albert: NYU online class registration and grade reporting system
  • The City: Manhattan
  • ConWest: "Conversations of the West" is a literature/history/philosophy course that will drive you crazy. Everyone must take it, and no AP score on anything will get you out of it.
  • E and L: Eisner-Lubin Auditorium on the fourth floor of Kimmel, used often for student productions
  • FYRE: First-Year Residential Experience, refers to all freshman dorms
  • Judicial: Meeting with your CDE or A/CDE of your building if you've violated policy
  • MAP: Morse Academic Plan, required classes taken mostly during freshman year
  • PNG: Persona non grata. You don't want one. If you get one, you're prohibited from entering that building—indefinitely.
  • To swipe: To get a meal with your meal plan
  • The train: Subway
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Become really good friends with your adviser—they can make or break your schedule.
  • Bring comfortable, fashionable shoes. Walking a mile to class in an uncomfortable pair of heels is tough to do.
  • Don't just hang out with people you already knew from high school. Branch out.
  • Every student at NYU was "that kid" in high school with the incredible talent. Well, guess what? That's every other kid's story, too. It's taking your talents to a new level.
  • Get a meal plan with the biggest amount of Declining Dollars.
  • Join clubs and activities in order to meet people.
  • Know the weather before you leave your dorm.
  • Learn how to navigate the subway.
  • Leave your door open when you're home, to meet people on your floor.
  • Plan your study abroad early, and get your Visa application in even earlier.
  • Research professors before selecting a class.
  • Take advantage of the free events NYU offers.
  • There's a ton of free printing on campus, so you don't need your own printer, but plan to print early—lines can be long!
Tips to Succeed
  • Always speak up when you feel you have been graded unfairly. All grades are subject to change.
  • Ask your professors for help—they don’t bite. Most of them are more than willing to help students outside of class.
  • Come with an open mind, and you'll make some amazing friends from all over the world.
  • Don't be shy. The only way you can make friends is if you go to all the fun events and make yourself known to everyone else.
  • Explore both the city and the campus! There are so many opportunities for free shows, information about various clubs, and food all over campus, but you've got to look for it.
  • Go to class. It really does help even if you aren't paying total attention; it is good to be there and make yourself present.
  • Never willingly sign up for an 8 a.m. class—you’ll probably oversleep at least once.
  • See the city, go to class, and don't take too many reading-intensive classes at once. The main reason students don't like NYU or they transfer is because they had unrealistic expectations that were not met. Experience NYU for what it is and not what you expect it to be.

The Societies

A thing you often hear concerning New York University is its lack of school spirit and community. What those people don't know, or aren't letting on about, is that there are numerous clubs, organizations, and societies which create plenty of tightly knit communities within the umbrella of NYU.

Some of these societies are well known and high profile, others are less so. Some have long and storied histories, and others are complete mysteries. Once thing is for certain: if you are a student of merit and moral character, you may be tapped before you know it, and when that day comes... a community like you have never imagined will be awaiting you.

A Fit for a Certain Type

Nyu is perfect for the people that enjoy the unexpected. Parties are hard to count on, so you have to make your own fun, but then again, you're in New York City. Lost of fun events, concerts, shows, indie movie theaters, and then the occasional rooftop apartment party that seems to make living anywhere but ny not worth it.
