Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

New York City’s public transportation system gets plenty of praise from NYU students. Students say subways are the easiest and cheapest way to get around, since they never have to deal with NYC traffic, as is the case with other means of transportation in the city, such as buses and taxis. The MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority) strives to make subway use convenient and affordable, and with options such as the 30-day unlimited MetroCard, you can commute daily via the subway as many times as you want for 30 days with this card. It is a little expensive ($104), but in the long run, it is worth it, especially if you work or live off campus and commute to school daily.

Although the natures of both the MTA and the subway maps may be intimidating, you will most likely find subway officials in the subway stations, and NYC commuters are often willing to assist if you ask for their help. Public transportation in New York City is largely reliable and convenient, so much so that there is little need for a personal car. Biking around the city is also a great alternative, with the increase of bike lanes in the city.

Not Too Necessary, but There If You Need It.

There is a variety of options with transportation. The subway system is excellent and relatively cheap. Taxis will be a bit pricier unless you travel with four people and not too far. NYU also offers Public Safety Ride which is like a taxi but I think they'll only do it after a certain time. There is also the bus system of NYU which takes students from campus to dorms scattered throughout the city, but it has a strange schedule I have heard. It is pretty easy to get to JFK. You could just take a taxi (easiest), but there is also the subway to Jamaica and then AirTrain to the airport.

Walk!

Very walkable campus, plus theres NYC public transportation (subway, bus, cab) if you need to go farther off. NYU has free bus service that picks up and drops off students around campus so if theres bad weather you dont have to walk to class.

Long-Distance Transportation

I believe NYU should invest in bus shuttles for long-distance transportation for students who have internships or have work affiliations with NYU. The NYU bus services only stops at East 33rd street. There are other students who live farther and commute, who have difficulty paying for public transportation. It would be more convenient if the bus lines could travel farther than 33rd street.
