Off-campus housing is a very popular option among upperclassmen at North Carolina A&T. After a year or two of living on campus, sharing a bathroom and dividing living space, there comes a time when many students decide to move off campus. Aside from feeling "too old" to have a roommate, some students move into off-campus apartments because they may feel that the lottery process for choosing a desired room, roommate, and dormitory is unfair. Choosing an off-campus apartment may seem less complicated than waiting for a lottery number. Living off-campus provides students with more freedom than they are afforded while living on-campus. You have access to your own kitchen, which you may or may not have to share with roommates, a spacious living room and a personal bathroom. Some neighborhoods may even have move-in specials, such as a reduced security deposit or move-in fee, free flat-screen TVs for new residents, and free Wi-Fi. Also, some students report that living off-campus costs less than or just about the same as living on campus. Although living off-campus affords students with more freedom, it can also be an inconvenience. Some neighborhoods are further from campus than others, which requires students to walk or drive longer distances than others to campus. Also, although you may not be required to have parking permits in certain neighborhoods, you are still required to have one to park on campus, and this can be quite the inconvenience. Some neighborhoods are also safer and more closely monitored than others. Although there may be more security issues in some neighborhoods compared to others, the Greensboro Police pay close attention to areas where house parties are thrown and crime may occur, which are most likely in neighborhoods inhabited by college students.
