Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics at NCSU are great. Even though the teams hit bumpy roads, there is still strong backing at football and basketball games. College is not just about varsity sports, though. NC State makes it very reasonable to partake in club sports or even intramurals. This is usually the difference in how much time a person wants to dedicate. Intramurals and club sports are both about fun, but participating in a club sport can oftentimes be much more intense than intramurals. The University does a great job of organizing intramural functions and supporting the students’ activities. They should also be commended for the vast number of options given to students. Almost every sport is listed under a club or intramural sport; so once again, there is something out there for everyone, in the athletic scheme of things.

The only drawback might be the ticket distribution and tailgating restrictions. Many students don’t agree with the new online ticket distribution system since it takes away from the personal interaction of it—if you want a ticket, they feel, it should be first-come, first-served by waiting in line. The other issue students recently have brought up is that you can only tailgate four hours before the start of a football game. These restrictions have all been implemented by the University with good intentions, but few students find them ideal.

"Cardiac Pack"-Best Description for NC State Athletics

NC State Athletics have come a long way in recent years. The most dominant sport is football; the process to get a ticket for football games is purposely made difficult because of the high demand. Men's basketball is slowly trying to make a name for itself again after being in the media for negative attention. Overall, athletic events are fun to attend and the fan base at NC State is among one of the best in the nation. The phrase "Cardiac Pack" is commonly used in sporting events where the school has a lead at one point, but then tension builds towards the end of the game!

Very Fun and Mostly Family-Friendly

Varsity sports at NC State are a pretty big deal. Our fans are known for traveling very well to away games, and home games for all sports are usually pretty packed. The support of the fans as well as the great bands for football and basketball make attending any sporting event here a good time.

Most Popular Sports

Football and basketball are by far the most popular sports. Students get together and tailgate before games and have the most school spirit during the fall semester and early into the spring semester. Baseball, however, has given fans a good run for their money, especially after making it to the playoffs last year.

School Spirit

School spirit is strong at NCSU. Remember, we do not like the Tarheels! Recite the following as a bedtime prayer: We’re the Red and White from State, And we know we are the best. A hand behind our back, We can take on all the rest. Come o’er the hill Caroline, Devils and Deacs stand in line, The Red and White from NC State. Go State! And it will also help to know the official fight song: Shout aloud to the men who will play the game to win We’re behind you, keep fighting for State— Hold that line, hold ‘em fast, We’ll reach victory at last We’re behind you, keep fighting for State— Rise up to the fray and let your colors wave Shout out for dear old NC State—Go State! And where e’er we go We’ll let the whole world know We’re behind you, keep fighting for State!

Getting Tickets

Tickets for students are free; however, there is a lottery system that determines which students get tickets (https://ticketreturn.solidspace.com/ncsu). Oftentimes, students will register in block seating so all their friends can sit together. There is no guarantee of winning a ticket, but participating in a group like the Wolfpack Club helps increase your chances of winning tickets to all games.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Pullen Park is closest to campus, but Lake Johnson is better since they rent out kayaks, canoes, and paddle boats for only $4 an hour.
