College Prowler Take
Athletics at NCSU are great. Even though the teams hit bumpy roads, there is still strong backing at football and basketball games. College is not just about varsity sports, though. NC State makes it very reasonable to partake in club sports or even intramurals. This is usually the difference in how much time a person wants to dedicate. Intramurals and club sports are both about fun, but participating in a club sport can oftentimes be much more intense than intramurals. The University does a great job of organizing intramural functions and supporting the students’ activities. They should also be commended for the vast number of options given to students. Almost every sport is listed under a club or intramural sport; so once again, there is something out there for everyone, in the athletic scheme of things. The only drawback might be the ticket distribution and tailgating restrictions. Many students don’t agree with the new online ticket distribution system since it takes away from the personal interaction of it—if you want a ticket, they feel, it should be first-come, first-served by waiting in line. The other issue students recently have brought up is that you can only tailgate four hours before the start of a football game. These restrictions have all been implemented by the University with good intentions, but few students find them ideal.

Varsity sports are a big part of campus life. Football and basketball seasons are huge, and students get majorly involved in the games. The gym is one of the largest I've been to in the state, with any kind of weight training or athletic equipment you could want. I never played any intramural sports, but the selection is fairly versatile from soccer to lacrosse.

Being a senior at State and growing up in Raleigh, I can pretty much say that our athletics program is not the best. Games are fun no matter who you're rooting for, but State has let me down in sports, and we can never seem to come through in the clutch. We're not amazingly great in any sport is what I'm trying to say.

NCSU is a big sports school. There is even a cafeteria for athletes that is way better than the other cafeterias. I really hate this because there are people getting a free ride through college, as well as getting many benefits over regular students, and they wouldn't even be able to pass their courses without the help for athletes. I think it's sad that a higher education institution puts more importance on sports than on education. However, I understand that they do it because they're just a business and sports bring in money.

There is intense school spirit for varsity sports. Intramural sports are good but organized by students, so they tend to be victim to apathy.

Varsity sports are huge on campus....
Varsity sports are huge on campus. Everyone is rowdy about football and basketball. We sure have some passionate fans. Great facilities as well---I'd say best in the ACC! I participated in the club lacrosse program at State, and it was a great experience. I loved traveling to other colleges to play against people of my skill level. Plus the low committment helped me focus on school more. Intramurals are also great, and lots of people participate. They have a variety of sports ranging from dodgeball to basketball and flag football.

School Spirit
School spirit is strong at NCSU. Remember, we do not like the Tarheels! Recite the following as a bedtime prayer: We’re the Red and White from State, And we know we are the best. A hand behind our back, We can take on all the rest. Come o’er the hill Caroline, Devils and Deacs stand in line, The Red and White from NC State. Go State! And it will also help to know the official fight song: Shout aloud to the men who will play the game to win We’re behind you, keep fighting for State— Hold that line, hold ‘em fast, We’ll reach victory at last We’re behind you, keep fighting for State— Rise up to the fray and let your colors wave Shout out for dear old NC State—Go State! And where e’er we go We’ll let the whole world know We’re behind you, keep fighting for State!
Getting Tickets
Tickets for students are free; however, there is a lottery system that determines which students get tickets (https://ticketreturn.solidspace.com/ncsu). Oftentimes, students will register in block seating so all their friends can sit together. There is no guarantee of winning a ticket, but participating in a group like the Wolfpack Club helps increase your chances of winning tickets to all games.
Most Popular Sports
Football and basketball are by far the most popular sports. Students get together and tailgate before games and have the most school spirit during the fall semester and early into the spring semester. Baseball, however, has given fans a good run for their money, especially after making it to the playoffs last year.
Best Place to Take a Walk
Pullen Park is closest to campus, but Lake Johnson is better since they rent out kayaks, canoes, and paddle boats for only $4 an hour.
