College Prowler Take
The computer network at NCSU is very convenient for most students. All students may work off of the same network, which is nice, though it can make a computer more susceptible to viruses. Almost every college on campus has at least one main public computer lab. Sometimes these labs are occupied by classes to give students a general introduction to unfamiliar courseware programs like MAPLE. The computers in open labs have many different interfaces, making it easy to use programs such as UNIX, Linux, and MAPLE lab, which is required for all engineering calculus courses. Computer labs are not usually crowded, although many labs located in dormitory lounges tend to crowd a little when a MAPLE math lab is due. Computer labs offer the option of not buying expensive software that the student may not want to purchase. ResNet is a network service provided to students who live at NCSU; this service allows a student to connect his or her personal computer to NCSU’s computer network.

Just about everything dealing with...
Just about everything dealing with computers here is good. I can usually find a computer in a lab or in the library if I need one. You can also borrow a laptop from the library for a few hours if you need. Although, in the middle of the day, the library is usually pretty packed, and you can't find a computer in the commons, so you have to go upstairs and look.

If you need somewhere to work, you can usually find one. The problem is you might have to walk clear across campus. The library is usually busy, but if you are patient, a computer will open up.

There are very nice computer labs...
There are very nice computer labs all over campus, a few of which are open 24/7. Also, many of the classrooms have computers. Sometimes a few of the computer labs get crowded, especially the ones in the library, but no mater how busy, one can always gain computer access because the library rents out laptops to students for up to four hours. So a laptop, though very handy, is not at all necessary.

Students that have their own...
Students that have their own laptops with wireless Internet will never have to worry about finding an open computer spot in the labs.

There are enough computer labs on...
There are enough computer labs on this campus that you can find one to use. If you can’t find one, you can check out a laptop (an Apple or a Dell) from the library and be just fine. I would advise bringing your own computer so that you can use it in your room and not have to go to the lab or the library just to use a computer. |
