Two things: Raleigh, and a large portion of NC overall, are still learning what being diverse means. I think they're doing pretty well, considering the history of entrenched intolerance in the state overall. Number two is, I think to some extent it depends on your program. I'm a DE Comp Sci student at NC State and the folks in my classes come from all over and from all career levels. There is a fair amount of diversity in the upper levels, at least.
