Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

NC State considers safety a top priority. The campus grounds are dotted with blue-light emergency phones, and Campus Police offers an escort service for students. Despite their positive role on campus, though, they’re often shown disdain by the students because of their role in monitoring underage drinking. Another common complaint is the massive number of parking tickets distributed.

Bicycle storage and dorm entrances are also not very tightly secured. All dorms are locked, and students are supposed to verify their residence in a dorm using their IDs or call a room using the speaker phones outside the hall, but the majority of the time, students let one another in, regardless; there are usually no security guards around the dorm entrances. Many bike racks are near dorms and classroom buildings, and after a bike has been stolen, a student’s only recourse is to file a report with Campus Police; there is typically nothing the police can do, unless someone saw a suspect. Overall, students feel that Campus Police have the right priorities, but there is room for improvement in a few areas.

Could Do Better

A lot of buildings on campus are old and falling apart, but of course they don't renovate those. Several buildings/ dorms should have been torn down years ago. There is smoking absolutely everywhere, getting stuck behind one in the tunnels can be torturous. There are rules requiring smokers to be 25 ft away from the build, but no one follows this or enforces it. Campus dining probably causes a lot of stomach issues. There are several bad neighborhoods nearby so crime can be a problem, especially if the homeless wander on campus. Bikes are only safe if you have a u-bolt lock. Cars should always be locked. It's also not hard at all to get into a dorm without a key.

Campus Safety

Public safety personnel do a good job of alerting students to campus crime, etc. I do not live on campus and can say that in the one year and a half that I have bee enrolled, there has not been any major criminal activity.

Big School Safe

I have never felt unsafe on NCSU campus. It is a big, but they keep it safe. You have to have a key to get into the dorm then into your own suite, so there is little chance of petty theft.
