The city environment does limit the space for athletic arenas for the University. Northeastern's football team was cut in 2009, one of the reasons being the lack of attendance at sports games due to the fact that Parsons Field was a considerable distance from the University. Basketball and hockey, however, are still very popular at Northeastern, and many students head to Matthews Arena to support the teams. "The Beanpot" is an annual hockey tournament between Boston College, Northeastern, Boston University, and Harvard. It has become one of the biggest sports events of the winter season in Boston.

Unless you're getting tickets for the Beanpot, getting tickets to Northeastern sports games is fairly easy. All students can obtain two tickets for free just by showing their Northeastern ID. The school spirit at athletic events is not comparable to that of bigger schools or state schools, but there is always cheering and excitement among students.
