Everyone I know had a roommate but yes there are single dorms available. However, living in the dorms will still expose you to lots of new gems in common areas

There are single dorms available, however you might not have as much of a choice in the LLC since there really aren't too many. If this is a serious condition, you should contact NU's Disability Resource Center and they can help accomodate you. Otherwise, you might want to consider getting a double because you'll be exposed to an unavoidable variety of germs anyways, and having a roommate offers a better freshman experience.

Why should freshmen avoid International Village?

The campus housing provided by Northeastern is very accommodating. Most dorms have a modernized atmosphere and offer the comforts you would hope to find in a dormitory building. Freshman housing is distinctly designed for the purpose of meeting people and living in unity among other freshmen. There is a great emphasis placed on "community," so there are plenty of dorm activities and events. All freshman dorms have communal bathrooms on each floor, and most floors are either all girls or all boys. Most freshman-year honors students are placed in better dorms than regular freshmen; some even live in apartment housing.

After freshman year, the University implements a lottery system weighed by seniority. You shouldn't have to worry about getting a bad lottery number, especially if you’re living with multiple people, because each student gets his or her own number. Therefore, whoever has the highest lottery number can pick a living situation for the entire group. The apartment-style housing is very reasonable and designed like an average apartment. The one good thing about living on campus is that the apartments are a lot nicer than those off-campus apartments in Boston.
