College Prowler Take
Eleven orientation leaders recently had to resign as a result of drinking underage at a party and serving alcohol to minors. These students were among Northeastern’s finest, and it was a classic case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. A fellow student reported the orientation leaders and prompted the Student Government Association president to resign as well. This might say something about how strict campus is, and the attitude Boston in general takes toward underage drinking. Possessing alcohol as a minor is a big deal here, and you will get written up and passed along to Judicial Affairs if you’re not careful. Though some students point out that campus security is more concerned with preventing drug use and older students providing alcohol for other minors, the fact remains that students do need to be cautious.

Residence halls have RAs on duty, so if they hear something, they'll see what's going on. You can have alcohol if you're 21. I'd say the drug policies are pretty strict, but since I don't do drugs, I'm not sure. But, it seems like freshmen especially get caught if they have drugs.

Res Life and NUPD are really strict about drugs and underage drinking because they have to be—Boston is incredibly strict about those things. When you are over 21, you can have alcohol on campus, and if you are underage, you usually can, too, as long as you aren't too loud or ridiculous. The RAs will give you a warning before you get written up. Some RAs are really strict and some aren't strict at all, so it is really a toss up.

It's not a dry campus. Campus police aren't anything to be worried about, but Boston PD will get involved in off-campus parties. Campus policies are definitely livable, and, for anyone who gets in trouble, the campus can laugh about it in our weekly crime log!

The NU police is well known for breaking up parties. It doesn't matter if it's on campus or off—if there is a complaint call or it's known that there is underage drinking or pot smoking, they will break up the party and force you to have a hearing with the student board of conduct, know as OSCAR. If you are just having a good time with friends and aren't being obnoxious, the NU police won't bother you. It is only when you are drinking or smoking pot outside, passed out in the hall, being really loud, or have too many people in a room, throwing up, or being carried back to your room, that the campus police will break up parties, just like any city cop would. So, if your goal is to remake Animal House, be aware that the NU police will break up your parties and make you have hearings.
