College Prowler Take

Since this is the Information Age, a college student really benefits from having his or her own computer. You can find relatively cheap models since computers are getting updated all the time, and the older versions go on sale. The system at Northeastern is really magnificent; the University offers state-of-the-art computers in its labs, and every student will be able to find one that he or she feels comfortable using. NU professors are finally starting to use the Blackboard system to post assignments and document class discussions, so it is quite necessary to have access to the Internet at all times. With a few computers in just about every campus building, you can pretty much always check your e-mail, even if you can’t surf the web.

Whether going on Instant Messenger or Facebook, students rely on their own personal machine to connect with other students, and also to research and study for class. Do yourself a favor and ask for your graduation gift to be a sparkling new computer.

InfoCommons is the main computer lab at Northeastern. Most of the time it's not crowded, but there are times when you have to wait. However, you could always go the second floor of the library because there's another computer lab there that not many people know about. There's wireless Internet pretty much everywhere, except in your dorm room.

Northeastern is a big school, so you should think about bringing your own laptop or computer so you can easily do your work from your dorm room or library. The library is usually pretty crowded, so having your own laptop is a plus.

Although Northeastern says that...

Although Northeastern says that students don’t need to have their own computers, I can’t imagine surviving college without one. The computer laps are pretty crowded on average, but I’ve never had a problem finding a computer. I definitely think the best part about the labs is the free printing service [at Infocommons].

I have always had my own computer...

I have always had my own computer at school, but I actually find myself using the labs at Northeastern about as much as my laptop. There are several computer labs in Snell Library, but the InfoCommons on the first floor is by far the largest, and it’s open 24 hours a day; it also has Macs and places for you to plug in your laptop. The only bad thing about the lab is that it can fill up fast around finals, and waiting for a computer when you’ve got a paper due in two hours isn’t the greatest, especially when all you want to do is print something.
