College Prowler Take

Students embrace the diversity on Northeastern’s campus, and it doesn’t seem like most of the campus is white. If you walk from the quad to the library, you will pass every kind of race and nationality. The University also has exchange students who stay here for a semester. The area surrounding campus is diverse as well—there are really wealthy neighborhoods, like where John Kerry lives in Beacon Hill, and there are blue-collar neighborhoods, like Dorchester. Sometimes, groups on campus will team up and have a joint event, such as a recent Jewish/Latin American night where students learned salsa and Israeli dancing. The Latino/a Student Cultural Center provides resources for academic and personal counseling, as well as professional mentoring. It also houses the Latino, Latin American, and Caribbean studies minor. The center is equipped with a computer lab, a seminar room, a student office, a kitchen, and a beautiful deck.

If you choose to study abroad, you will fulfill your diversity requirement just by successfully participating. NU offers quite a few study abroad options, such as programs to Australia, France, Italy, and Chile.

Coming from a suburban town...

Coming from a suburban town outside of Boston, my high school was far from what you would call diverse. So, when I came to Northeastern it was really refreshing to see so many different types of students. There are students from all over the world and all over the country. There are student groups for many different cultures, religions, and attitudes. It's been really cool—especially when taking classes to learn about different cultures—to walk around campus and see different kinds of people or ride the elevator in my building and hear all the different languages being spoken.

From what I hear from friends at...

From what I hear from friends at other schools, it seems that NU is quite diverse compared to most, and the school is not shy about bragging about this. It is cool that you can have class with so many different races, genders, economic standings, and international students. Also, the University is well know for being a hotbed for people who are liberal and Democrats, but I must say NU has a lot of Republicans and conservative-minded people, which is great because in this time of knowledge, this allows us to learn from different point of views and end the tension later on in life.

It's not very diverse at...

It's not very diverse at Northeastern, even though they try to act like it is. Especially among the girls, practically every single one is white, walking around in a North Face and Ugg boots. I think it's diverse just because I come from a really small town, but people from more diverse high schools in New York City say it isn't diverse at all. There's a fair amount of Asians, but that's it for ethnic diversity. Politically is one way that is diverse though. Sexual diversity is kind of the down-low—I don't think the gay-straight alliance here is very big.

I would say that we have a pretty diverse campus. Overall, most of the students are white, but there are a good number of folks from all kinds of different backgrounds. Politically, as a school, we are quite liberal. I think I've met three or four people who consider themselves conservative. I'm sure there are more, but the overall liberalness of the school probably keeps them somewhat muted. Economically speaking, there are a great deal of people at NU who are there simply because they can afford it and for no other reason. But, I'm sure that's true for a lot of competitive schools.

Facts

Economic Status

Northeastern is an expensive school, but the vast majority of the student body receives financial aid. Some students are really poor, and others are astonishingly rich; Chances are, you’ll find someone in every economic group.

Gay Pride

Northeastern has NuBiLaga, which is the group for bisexual, lesbian and gay students. They host Sexual Awareness Week and Month events and are welcomingly received. Being gay is no big deal at all here at NU, or in Boston.

Minority Clubs

Barkada, Black Student Associateion, Cape Verdean Student Association, Caribbean Students’ Organization, Cultural Dance Organization, Deaf Club, Haitian Student Unity, Hillel, Hindu Student Council, Latin American Student Organization, and the Society of Women Engineers, just to name a few.

Most Common Religions

Northeastern has its own spiritual life center, featuring the beautiful Sacred Space. Many religious groups hold meetings here, and yoga sessions—which are sometimes offered for free—are frequently taught here, as well. Nearly every religious group is represented on Northeastern’s campus, with groups for Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Hindu, and Wiccan students, just to name a few.

Political Activity

Northeastern students tend to lean toward the liberal end of the spectrum, though you can certainly find Republicans among the student body, as well. The NU Democrats and NU Republicans are two student groups that are very active around campus and were particularly visible around the time of the 2008 election. Politics are a popular topic at Northeastern, and when Barack Obama was elected, students showed their overwhelming support by celebrating all across campus and throughout Boston.
