Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Overall, Boston is a fairly safe city, considering its size and student population. The level of safety is really a determinant of the neighborhood. Like any city, it's important to stay alert and remain cautious when it comes to bad neighborhoods or walking alone at night. If you are smart about your surroundings and take general safety precautions, you should feel safe around Northeastern. The campus is a very nice area and predominantly safe; however, if you're heading up to Mission Hill or in the direction towards Roxbury, those areas can feel less protected. Residence halls are strict about patrolling the entrances and making sure that no intruders get into the areas. Most students feel safe around the campus areas, and if something makes them uncomfortable, there are always resources nearby.

The NUPD and campus security officers make a significant effort to ensure that students are safe and secure in their environment. Public Safety usually patrols around campus in the late hours and even offers students rides to any location that is within one mile from campus. There are many emergency call-boxes surrounding the campus borders; they are easily distinguishable with a blue light on top and the title "Northeastern University Campus Emergency Phone." The Boston Police Department is located right next to Northeastern's campus, and the department recognizes its responsibility to provide protective services to the campus community.

Safe Enough

I have never felt unsafe on Northeastern's campus but I have been around some strange company close to the borders of campus.
