Quick Stats

School Slang
  • ABP: Au Bon Pain
  • afterHOURS: Northeastern’s on-campus lounge, where you can get Starbucks, see musical performances (often free), and attend events such as date auctions and "Battle of the Bands."
  • BHOP: The Boston House of Pizza
  • The caf: Cafeteria/dining hall, either in Stetson West or Stetson East
  • Co-op: Short for cooperative education, a co-op job typically lasts six months and is similar to an internship but with more responsibility. Nearly all Northeastern students take part in the co-op program.
  • Curry: The Curry Student Center, where student groups have their offices; it's also home to many of Northeastern’s on-campus dining locations such as Wendy’s and Taco Bell.
  • Dav: Davenport Commons, where many upperclass students live in on-campus dormitories
  • The Hill: Mission Hill is the area past Northeastern on Huntington Avenue, where many students choose to live when going off campus because of the less expensive housing options.
  • Mass Ave.: Massachusetts Avenue
  • Middler: The year between sophomore and junior year at a five-year school
  • OSCCR: Pronounced “Oscar," it's the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution. If you get in some sort of trouble while a student at Northeastern, chances are you’ll hear from OSCCR.
  • The T: This is a nickname for Boston’s subway/public transportation system; it will take you almost anywhere you want to go!
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Boston weather can be very unpredictable! One day it can be sunny and 60 degrees, and when you wake up the next day, there’s snow on the ground. Come prepared for every type of weather—bring rain boots, an umbrella, a heavy winter coat, and shorts.
  • Get as involved as possible! Northeastern is a large school, and it can be easy to feel lost in the crowd if you’re just drifting along. By joining activities and meeting new people, it will help make the large university feel a lot smaller and a lot more welcoming.
  • Most students tend to choose a major before entering Northeastern or they quickly make a decision during their freshman year. Make sure you know enough about a major before you choose it—what classes will you have to take, how large is the program, what kind of co-op position will be available to you, etc.
  • Your roommate isn’t permanent—if you’re having trouble, speak with your resident assistant or resident director, and they’ll help you sort out the issue or place you in a new living arrangement.
Tips to Succeed
  • If the work isn’t coming to you as naturally as you’d like, don’t wait and hope that it will just click—meet with your TA or professor for extra help. It may seem easier to miss class in college than in high school, especially if the professor doesn’t take attendance, but missing out on class will only hurt you in the long run. You’ll do poorly on tests, and in your later years, you’ll end up trying to repair your damaged GPA.
  • If you’re feeling overwhelmed by a particular class, speak with your professor. The professors at NU are incredible, and almost all of them are willing to work with you and your situation. Let them know what’s going on and see if you can figure out some sort of agreement about an upcoming deadline.
  • Scope out student groups as soon as you get on campus (or before arriving). Find out what clubs and activities are interesting to you, and make sure you get involved from the beginning! It can be overwhelming to attend such a large university, especially if you’re at a different school than most of your friends. By joining a club or two right away, you’re not only finding a place to fit in, but you’ll meet people with similar interests and feel much more comfortable being away from home.

Five Years Equals a Job After Graduation

The best thing about Northeastern BY FAR is the co-op program. Most students attend Northeastern for five years, and go on 2-3 (usually PAID) six month co-ops. Co-op offers students a break from the traditional classroom experience, not to mention a real, 9-5 job to put on their resume. Additionally, many students receive job offers for after graduation from their co-ops. Ultimately, experience with co-op makes Northeastern students infinitely more desirable than other students and significantly increases the likelihood that they will have a job post-graduation.

Enclosed Campus in the City

My favorite thing about Northeastern is that it really feels like a college campus. The buildings are relatively enclosed and you can walk to everything. You don't feel like you're in the middle of Boston until you step out onto huntington Ave. and can walk to the Prudential Center, or look out of your window and see the lights of Fennway park. It really has the best aspects of a traditional enclosed college campus and living in the city.

Traditions
  • Beanpot Hockey: This ice hockey event involves a tournament between Boston College, Boston University, Harvard, and Northeastern.
  • Sex Week: Every year, NU hosts Sex Week, a tradition where students can explore their sexuality through lectures and games.
  • Springfest: Springfest is a celebration before the end of the semester. Usually, NU gets big-name musical acts like Wiz Khalifa and Third Eye Blind to come to campus.
Urban Legends The Husky, Northeastern’s mascot, was adopted in 1927 when the first Husky, Sapsut, a canine with sled dog royalty, was brought to campus from Alaska. He received an honorary degree from the University president and was named forever more "King Husky." For decades, it has become customary for students to go to the Husky statue in Ell Hall and rub the Husky’s nose for good luck.
