College Prowler Take

Two words can accurately sum up the city of Boston: college town! Yes, Beantown is the ultimate place to be if you’re a college student. There are countless ways to spend your time, be it in Boston Common in the springtime, taking in a concert at the Paradise Rock Café, or going on tourist attractions like the Duck Tours. Make sure to check out a professional sporting even as Boston has some of the best teams in the country—and Fenway Park is a five-minute walk from Northeastern! Once you turn 21, more doors open up for you, but until you reach that crossroads, you can certainly get into many other clubs if that’s your thing. Comedy clubs, like the Comedy Connection and Improv Asylum, are always fun. There are many fabulous restaurants, shops, and, best of all, neighborhoods to wander around. Downtown Crossing is really close by, and that’s where the major department stores are. The theater district is a hop away from Downtown, and you can usually catch a Broadway-caliber show there for a pretty good price—there are occasionally special deals for NU students. The North End has great Italian food, and Chinatown has fantastically good deals, such as Dim Sum brunches.

No matter what you enjoy seeing, doing, or eating, the city of Boston and its suburbs, such as Brookline and Cambridge, have so much to offer, it’s impossible to think of going to college anywhere else.

Boston is a college town where we secretly all like to be better than the other colleges. But, Boston is also a city, so buy the Frommer's Guide to Boston as a freshman and do everything in the book there is to do.

The city is a dream come true for...

The city is a dream come true for any college kid. The first advantage is you are surrounded by so many colleges and universities that you are always next to like-aged people. The next great thing is the fact that although it's a big city, it feels more like a small town when you compare it to places like LA or NYC. So, when you are off on your own for the first time, you are not overwhelmed by big-city life. Third, you can go anywhere in Boston on the public transportation. But beware: The T is not reliable all the time. The city closes early because of its old Puritan history, which is tough on college students, but that's the only problem. I mean, there is nearly a bar on every corner, restaurants of any kind everywhere, and, as an big Boston sports fan, I love the sports. You can go to Bruins and Celtics games, and you haven't lived unless you experience a game and Boston during baseball season!

Boston is, without a doubt, the ideal city to go to college in. There are over 100 colleges and universities in the area, and the student-to-resident ratio is 5:1. The Christian Science Center is a beautiful area, located just a few blocks from campus. Also, the Prudential Center and Copley are just steps away from the freshman dorms. The only area I’d say to stay away from is Mission Hill at night—unless you know exactly where you’re going and who you’re going with—and the sketchy area around the upperclassman dorms on Columbus Avenue. Never go there alone after dark.

The atmosphere is fast-paced in Boston. It is a great place to attend college because Boston is populated mainly by young people (under the age of 30), and there are tons of other schools in our area, including Boston College, Boston University, Harvard, Tufts, Emerson, etc. There are so many places to go, so many things to do, but it does get expensive.

Boston has a good atmosphere, clean city, and a good amount to do. It has many universities and lots of students. Stay away from Lansdowne Street; it is so generic. Go to Whiskey Park, Aria, and Rumor.
