College Prowler Take
It doesn’t take much asking around on NU’s campus to discover that there are some very good deals off campus in the city of Boston and the neighboring towns. Some students pay $800 a month for a studio apartment on NU’s side of Fenway park, while others pay more than $1,000/month to have their very own rooms—although small—and share a bathroom, kitchen, and living room with three other students. Keep in mind, though, that when you live off campus, you end up paying extra for Internet connection and utilities bills. If you don’t mind doing that, and you’re tired of having to sign in guests and pay ridiculous amounts of money for campus dorms, then you might want to look into living off campus after freshman year. While Boston is most certainly a college town, NU students can get the vibe that adult neighbors would rather not have students around late on a Saturday night when the parties get going. If you live off campus, remember that your neighbors are probably not college students, and the noise level has to be kept at a respectable level. Also, living off campus means dealing with landlords, which can be unsettling. However, most students who live off campus really enjoy the sense of freedom it gives them and wouldn’t go back to campus living again.

This is Boston, so you can find an apartment. The only problem is how much do you want to pay and how far are you willing to travel to and from campus. No matter where you get the apartment, expect to pay an arm and leg—it's just how it is. Boston is a very expensive city to live in. And, the closer you are to the campus, the more you will pay, which is why students get places on Mission Hill. It's close, but it's a few minutes away from campus, which makes it hard to get to those early classes or get to class on bad weather days. Plus, it's New England, so any day can be a bad weather day!

Off-campus housing is definitely worth it. It isn’t difficult to find a nice place with you and your friends as long as you look early on (for fall housing, start looking for apartments in the spring, and no later than May.) |
