Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
- Boston weather can be very unpredictable! One day it can be sunny and 60 degrees, and when you wake up the next day there’s snow on the ground. Come prepared for every type of weather—bring rain boots, an umbrella, a heavy winter coat, and shorts.
- Get as involved as possible! Northeastern is a large school and it can be easy to feel lost in the crowd if you’re just drifting along; by joining activities and meeting new people, it will help make the large university feel a lot smaller, and a lot more welcoming.
- Most students tend to choose a major before entering Northeastern or quickly into their freshman year. Make sure you know enough about a major before you choose it – what classes will you have to take, how large is the program, what kind of co-op position will be available to you, etc.
- Your roommate isn’t permanent—if you’re having trouble, speak with your Resident Assistant or Resident Director, and they’ll help you sort out the issue or place you in a new living arrangement.
Tips to Succeed
- If the work isn’t coming to you as naturally as you’d like, don’t wait and hope that it will just click—meet with your TA or professor for extra help. It may seem easier to miss class in college than in high school, especially if the professor doesn’t take attendance, but missing out on class will only hurt you in the long run. You’ll do poorly on tests, and in your later years you’ll end up trying to repair your damaged GPA.
- If you’re feeling overwhelmed by a particular class, speak with your professor. The professors here are incredible, and almost all of them are willing to work with you and your situation. Let them know what’s going on and see if you can figure out some sort of agreement about an upcoming deadline.
- Scope out student groups as soon as you get on campus (or before arriving). Find out what clubs and activities are interesting to you, and make sure you get involved from the beginning! It can be overwhelming to attend such a large university, especially if you’re at a different school than most of your friends. By joining a club or two right away, you’re not only finding a place to fit in, but you’ll meet people with similar interests and feel much more comfortable being away from home.
Urban Legends
- The Husky, Northeastern’s mascot, was adopted in 1927 when the first Husky, Sapsut, a canine with sled dog royalty, was brought to campus from Alaska. He received an honorary degree from the University president and was named forever more King Husky. For decades, it has become customary for students to come here and rub the Husky’s nose for good luck.
Traditions
- Every year, NU hosts Sex Week, the BeanPot (Ice Hockey tournament), and SpringFest.
School Spirit
Students wear black and red, the school’s colors on Northeastern Day in May.
