Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Do you like Ramen noodles? Perhaps now is the time to begin stocking up. Eating on campus is not necessarily bad; it's just very disappointing. The food itself is very much hit-or-miss. Some days, you will be pleasantly surprised; other days, your taste buds will strike and form a picket line right there on the table. It's always an adventure when dining on campus because you don't know whether to expect a freshly cooked meal or if the crusty cheese, cold pizza, and hard noodles will be too much to handle.

Dining Services employs the catering giant Sodexo for most of its cuisine needs. The Union expansion has brought a few more options with places like Jamba Juice, Einstein Bros. Bagels, and Starbucks. That said, campus dining is still subpar. The options for vegetarians, vegans, students with food allergies, and even just the health-conscious are pretty poor. NAU has given more options to students lately but has not learned that quantity does not equal quality. The bottom line is that, when students talk about their on-campus dining experiences after they graduate, they will still have more bad stories than good.

HORRIBLE

There are not alot of places to eat on campus, after a while you get really sick of the food and fast. My reccomendation? Eat off campus or buy food for your room.

The meal plans are way too expensive, and like my husband he got overcharged.

Food Is AMAZING

They have a lot of places to eat around campus. There are two main dining halls that both serve pretty high quality and diverse food options, and their are plenty of other places you can go to on campus like Chic-fil-a, Einsteins bagels, pasta works, starbucks, and jamba juice.

  • Hungry late at night? Does a pizza sound really amazing? Call Gateway! There is a convenience store to the side of the Advising Center that is open until 2 a.m. most nights. You can get pizzas with dining dollars or meal transfers, and you can even call in your order so you don't have to wait in two ridiculously long lines––one to order, and another to pick it up. Both are usually chaotic.
  • Looking for a caffeine fix on North Campus and don't want to run down to the Union? The Bean and Beaker in the brand new laboratory building is a great bet and very conveniently located for science and communication majors. The baristas are usually nice and make a decent latte, and you can now buy salads and sandwiches as well. Chemicals and coffee… what's not to love?
Did You Know? What does a meal plan get me, you ask? Let's take a look. The dining hall food is set up into transfer meals and dining dollars. Certain items and food combinations count as a transfer, while others have to be bought using dining dollars, which basically act as a debit account for food. So, for example, one of the more popular meal plans for freshmen is 10 meals a week and $250 dining dollars for the semester. Each week, you have 10 meals to spend, and anything else can be bought with your dining dollars debit account. Your meal plan, as well as your MCE account, is stored on your NAU ID card. Simple enough, right?
