College Prowler Take

NAU is made up of predominately middle- to upper-class Caucasians. Though labels, for the most part, don’t carry very much weight, and a student’s economic background doesn’t matter when interacting with others. Because the city is such an accepting and open-minded environment, students tend to be very understanding and tolerant of lifestyles and ethnicities different from their own. NAU is very proud of the high enrollment of Native American and Hispanic students. Numerous programs and scholarships exist for these students, and NAU has ranked at the top of the country in the graduation rates of those particular minorities. Students don’t generally notice the diversity on campus because very few of the minority clubs take an active role. Aside from Omega Delta Phi and the Black Student Union, you’d be hard-pressed to get most students to name one of them. Even with a high number of international and exchange students, most Lumberjacks simply just don’t know what’s going on. Many of the minorities on campus normally stick to themselves, and there’s very little integration between cultures. However, that’s not to say there is none. Especially during Diversity Week, when students finally open up and traditions collide, it can really be a fun thing. In the end, NAU can be a very diverse place with plenty of acceptance; students just don’t seem to know it yet.

I feel as though it is a diverse campus. You see many types of people. There is a large Native American and Hispanic population. You see tons of different types of people. There are the frats and sororities, the hippies, the tree huggers, and there are the athletes. There is a huge mix of people and their interests.

Education

The campus is relatively diverse....

The campus is relatively diverse. We have the biggest lesbian population in the Western United States. There are a good number of Hawaiians, Hispanic, White, and Black students. The dominant group is Native Americans because we are so close to reservations and such. There are a lot of Christian religious groups, including LDS students.

Well, we have a large population of Native American students, but for the majority, we have a prominent campus of white, middle-class students. But we do also have a lot of non-traditional students who are older than 25, married, and have families. And we also have a strong international student population. The majority of our campus is white, but we also have representation from a lot of different groups, too.

The campus is diverse in its large representation of Hispanic and Native Americans, but not much else other than that. It’s a sea of white kids. Most students don’t even seem to notice that there are other races present on campus. The University really prides itself on the opportunities it provides students of different ethnicities, but it seems lost on the students. It feels like the vast majority of students come from upper-middle-class homes with working parents and 2.5 kids. Every once in a while, though, you run into someone who has a story and a history, and it’s pepperings like that across the campus that make NAU just a bit different.

Facts

Economic Status

Christianity seems to dominate the religious social scene and spiritual organizations. There are numerous religious activities on campus. WWJD? He’d probably go to NAU.

Gay Pride

Gays and lesbians are openly accepted in this peace-loving, tree-hugging, hold-hands-and-sing-Kumbayah kind of town. Rainbows are everywhere, and NAU is a very warm and receptive community. PRISM, the gay and lesbian student club, is very active on campus.

Minority Clubs on Campus

NAU is, by and large, enrolled with upper-middle-class students. There are large numbers of Native American and Hispanics that do not fit the “families with money” stereotype; however, they are still in the minority.

Most Common Religions

Aside from Omega Delta Phi (the Hispanic social fraternity) and the Black Student Union, minority clubs do not seem to really have much presence on the campus. The students know they exist, but they know very little past that.

Political Activity

No ifs, ands, or buts about it, Flagstaff and NAU are liberal in every sense of the word. It’s not uncommon to have many of your professors openly speak out against Republican policies or beliefs. This is a very political town, and there are often Clash of the Titans-sized riffs between liberals and the various conservative groups on campus.
