Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Flagstaff is known as a hippie town, and the marijuana scene follows suit with the stereotype. If you want it, it's not difficult to find someone who has it. Likewise, alcohol is very easy to obtain—even if you're not 21. Harder drugs like cocaine and others exist in certain crowds, but they are certainly not very prevalent among the majority of NAU social scenes. Caffeine and tobacco exist as well, and usage definitely increases during the weeks leading up to final exams. Their presence, however, is never a problem, and students seem to be able to handle knowing their limits on lattes.

Though alcohol abuse is quite common on campus (where isn't it?), nothing else is really a problem. There is the large following of marijuana users, but it's never a negative issue. It's very easy to avoid being around marijuana, and most students are very understanding of those not wanting to engage in it. There is little to no pressure to try anything, so the environment never becomes judgmental or uncomfortable. Drugs at NAU consist of regular coffee breaks, a few annoying alcoholics, and some harmless joints from hippies looking to stay in touch with Mother Nature.

Pot Smokers Behind Gabaldon Very Likely

When sitting in the woods behind Gabaldon, I hear and smell alot of people smoking pot. Its a common thing to do here, so is drinking because there is not much to do here in this tiny college town.

Drugs? What Drugs?

I have yet to encounter any drug or alcohol use on campus. I have only dealt with it at my off campus apartment complex with the young kids living on their own for the first time. NAU is a very clean school that is even surveying about banning cigarette smoking on campus. I enjoy their want to be environmentally friendly.
