Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Greeks at NAU are housed in Mountain View, perched atop a hill overlooking the campus like Mount Olympus. These students are highly involved with both campus activities and charitable events. The chapters each put on numerous fundraising events throughout the semester, raising thousands of dollars for local Flagstaff charities. Intramurals are also popular with Greeks. They consistently finish on the top of the standings in almost every sport. Some IM sports will even have separate leagues for the Greeks to play each other instead of other students.

Greek students are some of the most involved on campus and are vital members of the student government (ASNAU) and many other on-campus organizations. On the other hand, many Greeks also possess a pompous, Zeus-like attitude that really rubs some the wrong way. Greek students tend to only associate with themselves, and obvious segregation exists. Even the physical location of Mountain View furthers the feelings of separation between Greeks and everyone else. Fraternity parties are popular, and most can be attended by non-Greeks; however, unless you are a woman, you probably won't be welcomed with open arms. Overall, Greek life is a great way to feel like part of a community, but most non-Greeks would rather see them stick mythological lightning bolts you-know-where.

Greek Culture in Social Atmosphere

There are not a lot of Greeks on our campus in Chandler/Gilbert area. Therefore I am not sure what their social life is lile and how they feel. They have not stuck out to me. NAU is very nice community where the people accept every culture in attendance and embrace the differences within the cultures.

Greeks and Geeks

Greek life at NAU is huge, especially if you are a freshman. It seems like everyone and their best friend is in a frat or sorority, but you will never feel any pressure if you choose to opt out of greek life. The parties are great, but often get rolled by the cops because of the size of Flagstaff.

Greek Life Isnt Big

Greek life isnt super big at NAU. They do throw some parties and have events, but nothing like what you've probably seen on TV. Its more like a social club than what you'd expect of a Frat/Sorority.

Did You Know?
  • Each semester, the new pledge classes of the fraternities and sororities participate in what's called Singing for Standards. Traditionally, a sorority steals a fraternity's "standard," a wooden representation of the chapter's crest, and the guys have to sing to the ladies to get it back. Hang out in the halls of Mountain View, and you may be lucky to enough to catch one of their encore performances.
  • Most Greek chapters hold what they call I-Week, or Initiation Week. This is the time where the new pledges are inducted as active members into the fraternity or sorority. Entire wings in the Greek dorm are blocked off, and rumors fly regarding the activities of these top-secret Greek rituals.
  • Sorority recruitment usually takes place Labor Day weekend, the second week of school. Fraternity recruitment takes place the week after that. If you don't want to follow through and stay in a fraternity or sorority, it's easy to just drop and nobody will give you a second glance.
  • Greek life at NAU is absolutely nothing like the movies. Everyone generally gets along because they live in such close quarters and not segregated into separate houses. Greek Week, which takes place every Spring, brings everyone even closer together as they raise money for charity.
