Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The rumors surrounding the people at NAU abound. Your uncle once told you that all of the guys smoke pot and refuse to use soap. Your friend’s boss told him that all of the girls are overweight. Nevertheless, the guys and girls at NAU are nothing like what people say. Everyone is very laid-back and friendly. Groups are gender-integrated, and it’s easy to meet a potential ex-boyfriend or girlfriend at any moment. The guys’ styles range from preppy to hippie. On the average, you’ll find about 10 alcoholics for every single nice guy, but the gender ratio is in full effect, so there are litters of girls to choose from. The ladies’ styles are far less diverse, but most are very sweet and have that girl-next-door cuteness. Dating is common on the mountain campus, but if you’re looking to just hook up, there is plenty of action for that, too. Parties are the place to be for random sexual encounters, and the Lumberjacks are not shy about doing the dirty. The residence halls allow visitors without needing to check in, so don’t be afraid about bringing people back to your room. The University considers everyone an adult, so make sure to put on your big kid pants. When it comes to guys and girls at NAU, you’ll find that the people are very friendly, receptive, and there’s a group for just about everyone to fit into.

Friendly Environment You Won't Find Anywhere Else

Being a freshmen at Northern Arizona University, I was surprised to see how other students as well as professors and staff are easy to get along with. No matter where you go on campus there will always be someone saying hello with a smile.

Diversity

Being from Idaho and a slightly bigger city than Flagstaff I find the diversity very nice here. It was a surprise at first how diverse the area is. There are many different types and groups of people in the Flagstaff community. I enjoy the change in people I have met here.

Boys and Girls

There are many different types of people at NAU. There are hipsters, hippies, punks, preps, etc. But, all the people that I have met and had conversations with are all very nice. The way that people look does not affect their personality.

Facts

Social Scene

Students here are very friendly and warm. It's easy to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger. No matter where you are, most students are generally very easy to talk to. During their first few years of school, many students attend on-campus activities and programs. It's very easy to meet people simply by approaching them and introducing yourself. All the stereotypes are here, so there's a clique and a group for everyone to fit into—it's simply a matter of saying hello.

Hookups or Relationships?

Students usually enter the University while involved in a relationship. The first year of college does not yield the bliss and beauty that poor Jack and Jill had expected from the profoundly deep and fulfilling two weeks they had spent together in high school. As their college career progresses, students move on from their first relationship and seem to hook up and date a large amount of people. As they creep nearer to graduation, many students begin to settle down and once again enter a committed relationship.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Meeting someone on the mountain campus is very easy. NAU is very much a residential campus, so many of your options for dating will be on campus. Because people are so friendly, most are approachable and easygoing. Have the confidence to introduce yourself, and most NAU students will respond positively.

Classes are always a place to meet and greet the potentials. Group projects, copying notes, studying together—the possible date opportunities are next to endless when you throw textbooks into the romantic fold. If you want to work out, check out the Rec Center for all sorts of finely tuned bodies.

Dress Code

For the guys, skater/snowboarder/bro clothing seems to be popular, especially among frat guys. Dreadlocks and Rasta garb are also seen in hippie-driven Flagstaff. Once in a while, you’ll get your pretty-boy, A&F-wearing, American Eagle-toting guy that definitely aims to look his best at all times.

A popular movement on campus for both guys and girls is the American Apparel-driven "hipster" movement. Got a pair of really skinny jeans? A brightly colored V-neck? A pair of oversized sunglasses or black rimmed glasses? You’ll fit right in! There are many female athletes and a few hippie, non-showering types, but they are rare. Most of the girls come across with that girl-next-door kind of cuteness and charm. Not much makeup, classy clothing, cleanliness—these girls will look good but will not intimidate you.
