Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

No matter how you look at it, NAU is a safe place to be. Every once in a while, there is a sexual assault, usually on South Campus, and students will feel a little spooked. Yet, the consensus of most people seems to be that if you practice common sense, then there is nothing to worry about. Flagstaff is the “Dark Sky City,” so it only makes sense not to walk by yourself if you don’t have to. The blue-light phones are scattered all around the property, and NAUPD offers an escort service 24 hours a day. In addition, the on-campus police maintain a highly visible role and are constantly on the watch. Flagstaff is a very laid-back community, so very few serious problems ever arise. The residence halls have electronic access, which means you have to swipe your ID card to enter and only residents of that building will be let in to the building. Once again, practicing common sense makes the environment safer for everyone.

Flagstaff is a safe place, no bones about it. If students are able to use their heads and not put themselves into positions where bad things could happen, then all will be just fine. There is a decent sized homeless population, but to be honest most of them would rather have a friendly conversation with you than beg for your money. The police maintain a good balance and are not overly strict. They are around to deal with situations, but they don’t hover to the point where students feel uncomfortable. In the end, if people make smart choices and are careful about what they do, there’s no reason not to feel safe or relaxed.

Safe Place to Be

Campus is a very safe place to be. There are police phones all over campus that you can call the police by just pushing a button and you can expect someone there within two minutes. All of the dorms also have a great security system. The main doors to the halls lock automatically and most of the doors to the room do as well. It is difficult for anyone to get into a hall if they are not supposed to be there.

Very Safe

There is always NAU security roaming around and willing to help in any situation. We have "blue lights", if you are feeling unsafe or as if someone is following you, you pust the button. They are all over campus, and once they are pushed security can track where you are and ensure that you will make it to your destination safely.

Shaky Safety

Safety and security is not at its best, but its not at its worst. I have heard stories on campus about girls being attacked and not finding the suspect(s) behind them. However, this is due to not having paths lit up and allowing almost anyone on campus.
