Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

No matter how you look at it, NAU is a safe place to be. Every once in a while, there is a sexual assault, usually on South Campus, and students will feel a little spooked. Sexual assault usually consists of a homeless person yelling at a girl that she's hot. Yet, the consensus of most people seems to be that if you practice common sense, then there is nothing to worry about. Flagstaff is the "Dark Sky City," so it only makes sense not to walk by yourself if you don't have to. The blue-light phones are scattered all around campus, and NAUPD offers an escort service 24 hours a day. In addition, the on-campus police maintain a highly visible role and are constantly on the watch. Flagstaff is a very laid-back community, so very few serious problems ever arise. The residence halls have electronic access, which means that you have to swipe your ID card to enter and only residents of that building will be let into the building. Once again, practicing common sense makes the environment safer for everyone.

Flagstaff is a safe place, no doubt about it. If students are able to use their heads and not put themselves into positions where bad things could happen, then all will be just fine. There is a decent-sized homeless population, but to be honest, most of them would rather have a friendly conversation with you than beg for your money. The police maintain a good balance and are not overly strict. They are around to deal with situations, but they don't hover to the point where students feel uncomfortable. In the end, if people make smart choices and are careful about what they do, there's no reason not to feel safe or relaxed.

On Campus Vs. in Flagstaff

The college campus is extremely safe, well-light with patrols and a feeling of safety. Not so much around Flagstaff though. The school is very determined to keep us informed so we always know when there has been a new robbery or assault. The Flagstaff police department focus way too much on earning income from tickets and way too little on safety. The campus has its own police force, however. Which is very good..

NAU Is a Safe College to Attend

NAU has great safety on campus. They have campus cops and on campus health services. All of the dorms require your ID to get into and your ID does not work at any other dorm you belong to. They change the locks on individual rooms every semester, too. NAU also has the Blue Light stations. These are scattered all around campus and if you feel threatened (walking alone at night, for example) you can go to one of the stations and a campus officer will immediately come to your assistance and escort you. I have never heard of any serious crime or threats to safety or health at NAU. Of course, we are reminded to always lock our dorms or bikes if they are left unattended, though.

Safety at NAU

We have a variety of safety precautions that have been put into place at NAU such as the blue light service, campus escorts, security, and campus police that help to keep NAU a pretty safe place. There are still crimes that take place, but overall the safety is pretty good.
