College Prowler Take
No matter how you look at it, NAU is a safe place to be. Every once in a while, there is a sexual assault, usually on South Campus, and students will feel a little spooked. Yet, the consensus of most people seems to be that if you practice common sense, then there is nothing to worry about. Flagstaff is the “Dark Sky City,” so it only makes sense not to walk by yourself if you don’t have to. The blue-light phones are scattered all around the property, and NAUPD offers an escort service 24 hours a day. In addition, the on-campus police maintain a highly visible role and are constantly on the watch. Flagstaff is a very laid-back community, so very few serious problems ever arise. The residence halls have electronic access, which means you have to swipe your ID card to enter and only residents of that building will be let in to the building. Once again, practicing common sense makes the environment safer for everyone. Flagstaff is a safe place, no bones about it. If students are able to use their heads and not put themselves into positions where bad things could happen, then all will be just fine. There is a decent sized homeless population, but to be honest most of them would rather have a friendly conversation with you than beg for your money. The police maintain a good balance and are not overly strict. They are around to deal with situations, but they don’t hover to the point where students feel uncomfortable. In the end, if people make smart choices and are careful about what they do, there’s no reason not to feel safe or relaxed.

Safety and security are good. I used to work late nights on campus, and I never felt unsafe. |

Never walk alone, especially at night. I’m not trying to be sexist, but if you are a girl, always have an escort. Because Flagstaff is the ‘Dark Sky City,’ we don’t put up a lot of lights. Meaning? More stars, less safety. |

The campus seems pretty safe. There are always going to be spots where, females especially, shouldn’t walk alone at night. NAU kind of feels like one of those places where, if you practice common sense and play it smart, you’ll be just fine. I have heard of a lot of sexual assault instances over the past few years, but again, I think it’s more a matter of putting yourself in the right kind of situation. |

I haven’t been caught yet. Other than that, it’s good, as far as I know. |

I find the campus to be extremely safe. I think the facts that we’re in the mountains, which are colder than Phoenix, and that there are scary pine trees everywhere make people think there are parts of campus that are creepy and unsafe. But really, I think we have the same problems as any other campus: drug- and alcohol-related violence, relationship violence, vandalism, and theft. But I don’t think it’s so prevalent that people should be fearful. |
