Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The beautiful scenery of Flagstaff comes at a price, and if you want to live off campus, be prepared to include an arm or leg with your monthly rent payment. Numerous apartment complexes are scattered around the city, and because Flagstaff is the location of many summer homes, several students choose to rent out houses. If you are able to get a few people together to help out with rent and utilities, the finances became a little less frustrating. Most of the non-student residents of Flag are very friendly and supportive of the school. If you do choose to move off, start looking as early as possible—spots will fill up quickly. Unless a student is forced to move off campus for judicial reasons, there is really no reason to get away from the dorms. Sure, you’ll get a bit more freedom, and perhaps you won’t have to share a bedroom, but trying to commute from off campus is ridiculous, and the price of a parking pass for non-resident commuters could buy you your own third-world country. If you find the right deal and the right people to room with, living off campus can be cheaper than living in a dorm; nevertheless, it’s not really worth the headache. Also, contrary to popular belief, freshmen are not required to live on campus, though they are strongly encouraged to, as moving off campus will leave you out of the loop regarding University events and activities.

First Year Off Campus

I chose to live off campus as a freshman. it is a MUCH cheaper option than living on campus with a bit more freedom. Also, my apartment complex is beautiful, however it is a bit pricy. It is cheaper to live farther away and buy a parking permit than to try and live close enough to walk. Also, it seems like you miss out on some stuff not living on campus. Also, it is hard to find an apartment, wait lists are a mile long!

Awesome

NAU is the only big income market in Flagstaff. There is plenty of housing everywhere. The further you go from campus the cheaper, and because its a small town it's not really that far.
