Not So Fast!

The computers on campus are all operated by one system. It very often kicks people out of the network for some odd reasons. Most of the time, you will be able to retrieve all your work, but sometimes you just won't. I highly suggest that you get your one laptop or even a desktop. Because each building provides its own wi-fi, you without a password, you will be able to get into the network no problem. I am so glad that I got my own my junior year.

21 and up

Nightlife at NAU is somewhat fun, and it all depends on WHO you know, and WHERE you know to go. So get out there and start making friends. Flagstaff doesn't have much to offer for entertainment if you are not 21 yet.

Avoid Mad-I

Fraternity parties are great- except we have no frat houses to have them at. The Greek Life dorm is nasty from all the vomit stains and Mad-I (where they hold most of the parties) is just as bad. As long as one knows people who live off campus, you're good to go. The bars close to under 21 pretty early, but once you're old enough there are several options!!

Umm Yeah

It's frustrating and and the process could have been better. It's kind of maddening talking to them. If you don't keep up with it and stay on top of it, you will be regretting it most likely.

Drug and Alcohol Safety

The drug scene is not very popular at NAU. Alcohol, however, is. Alcohol usage also depends on the people you become friends with and whether or not they use. Police enforcement is not as huge as movies and television shows make them seem. Its really only if they are called.

Shaky Safety

Safety and security is not at its best, but its not at its worst. I have heard stories on campus about girls being attacked and not finding the suspect(s) behind them. However, this is due to not having paths lit up and allowing almost anyone on campus.

Weather

Weather played a huge factor in my attendance in classes, at work, and what I ate during the day. My experience on campus was during a bad winter where it snowed in extreme amounts. During the extreme snow storms it was very hard to become motivated to walk across camopus in the freezing weather.

Student Social Life

Students have a very fun social life at NAU. There is always something fun to do with a group of students, or with some familiar faces. Everyone that I have come across has been very approachable and friendly, to anyone that they come across. Guys and girls seem to get along very well at this school, and each have many friends.

The Greek life is little cheaper compare to most schools in my area, which is rather expensive. Also there is a great amount of clubs and school events to get involve in.

Sometimes Unforgiving

When it comes it enforcing polices, the first time offense is usually just a warning. I am not completely sure what happens afterwards, but there are times when the staff can be unforgiving.

Punishments Are Reasonable

I believe that the policies are the school are reasonable. If students can not behave and follow the law than they should get punished for their actions. If there was no punishment than the students would not learn from their mistakes as much.

NAU and Flagstaff as One.

NAU is nestled in a college town, and its host, Flagstaff, is a very active, involved and liberal community. Films, events, shows, and sports play an important role not only at the school, but also in the community as well. The local ski resort, Arizona Snowbowl is plenty of motivation for students to enjoy the snow covered winters, and the plethora of nature hikes and beautiful trails make Flag the perfect oportunity for anyone who loves nature.

Don't Bring a Car.

Parking at NAU is ridiculous. For starters, the campus runs North to South, with little expansion East or West. There are two parking garages, with plans for a third, and different assorted parking lots -- all which require different parking passes that exceed $300 for the year. IF you don't bring a car, NAU charges a transportation fee of $30 a semester which in theory covers the free buses that constantly run on campus in addition to a new route that the city added, leading from downtown to the movie theatre on the West side - free with your NAU I.D.

Overall NAU Is a Nice Place

There are a lot of activities, concerts, club sports and bars to go to. Also outdoor activities are very popular here such as hiking, snowboarding and biking. Flagstaff, AZ has a beautiful scene and if you like snow and evergreens this is the right place for you.

The Parking at NAU Is Horrible!

Parking on campus is horrible! If you want to get a parking pass it only allows you to park at certain places depending on which "section" you bought. Not to mention the parking passes are about 400 dollars for a year. If you park in a place where your pass is not allowed or if you are not a registered vehicle, fines range from 15 to 120 dollars. Spaces get filled quick and you could spend a long time trying to find a spot.

Snow Is Amazing!

My dorm isn't too far from my classes, so getting to class isn't bad. If I'm able to get there with an iced drink in hand and wearing my TOMS shoes, anyone can do it. The snow is beautiful! Other times of the year are also perfect - Flagstaff has wonderful weather.

Feels Like Home

For some reason this town and school just clicks with people. You either love it or you hate it. But when you love it this place is like home. Due to somewhat smaller class sizes and degree programs, you really get to know your peers and professors. They become your family.

Greeks Are Good People but Not Worshiped

You would be surprised to know that Greek like is actually pretty big here. I've met a lot of great girls that are in sororities. The Greek kids aren't viewed especially well by the other students but I think that is just the two halves of the spectrum. There is only one large Greek dormitory on campus, and one of the fraternities, Delta Chi, has a house just off of campus!

Flagstaff

I love this city. First of all there are seasons unlike the rest of AZ! It's beautiful and when it snows, breathtaking. There are LOTS of outdoor activities if you are into that. Making friends here will be the greatest experience of your life because you get to partake in different activities. Some would say its a hippie town prone to hitch hikers (Route 66) which is true, but also its just a (somewhat expensive)healthy living city.

Flagstaff

Flagstaff is a funky, fun, lively town, where it is acceptable to sit at a coffee shop all day in flannel and sweats and ride your bike pretty much everywhere. The nightlife is not great if you are under 21, but during there day, there is so much to do! Beautiful Sedona is so close, Snowbowl is less than 30 minutes away for skiing and snowboarding, and Phoenix is only 2 hours away, so there is tons to do!

Average Nightlife at NAU

If you are looking for a party or for a night out dancing, they are always places to go, but they aren't always the best. The nightlife in downtown is pretty average, but thats understandable for being Flagstaff. General college parties are pretty entertaining, but they tend to get busted pretty often. If you're looking for fun, you can find it, but it will be average generally speaking.
