Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The tone on campus changed forever with the school shooting that occurred in February 2008, but it will still be shocking to most incoming freshmen just how much they can get away with and the level of freedom they will experience without their parents looking over their shoulders. The University will often look the other way when it comes to underage drinking, but carrying any type of weapon on campus, no matter your reason, is a one way ticket out of college. Violence is not accepted on any level, and the University comes down hard on anyone threatening the safety of its students. Most Community Advisors are cool and too concerned with their own lives to enforce most dorm regulations, as long as you don’t threaten their cushy existences by drawing unwanted attention to their floor. Keep your door closed if you are doing anything mischievous. Academic misconduct is a much more serious matter and dealt with harshly. Offenders face expulsion, which might be difficult to explain to your parents who are paying for your education. Be smart and don’t take a chance with your future out of laziness or overconfidence. NIU goes relatively easy on its students, so repay the favor by not stepping over the line and you will live the easy life for four years.

What Punishment?

While the school holds strict underage drinking and drug use, campus police are very lenient with it. If you do get caught and written up, it can be very severe. First-time offenders get a letter sent home to their parents, must take a alcoholic class, and can be fined. second- and third-time offenders are in danger of losing their housing along with any other punishment like before.

Strictness

The police and the CA group have zero tolerance. First time offenders dont get a letter home, but get pretty big fines. Most of the times, you just get fined a lot. Just dont do the most and you'll probably get off the hook

Not Enough Safe Transportation

After 11:30, there are no public transportation for students who study after hours, or for students who have projects to work on on campus. It isn't safe for those that have to walk at night.
