College Prowler Take
By and large, the men of NIU are an aggressive and horny bunch. Obviously there are exceptions to the rule, but there is a lot of social pressure to hook up with as many girls as possible. Even the sensitive, intellectual males have a strange passive-aggressive technique for seduction. Still, the guys do have their good points. Their sense of style is surprisingly good for a school primarily populated by the middle class, but they don’t look like they all came out of an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog. Many make good use of the campus recreation center and put a heavy emphasis on staying in shape. They may not be hot, but at least their hygiene is better than average.
It’s not Arizona State or Indiana, but the girls of NIU, who slightly outnumber the men, are fairly attractive. More importantly, they are approachable and rather easy to engage in conversation. You can ask a girl for her number at a bar or coffee house, and she’ll probably give it to you as long as you approach her with supreme self-confidence, which girls seem to appreciate quite a bit. On the downside, there are times when all the girls tend to look the same, as some forgo individuality to fit in. Don’t come to NIU looking for Amazonian beauties or studs that belong on Desperate Housewives. You will find neither in DeKalb. Still, there are enough decent guys and girls to make it worth your while. Students Speak Out

I think that with any college campus you’re going to find a lot of different ranks of girls. Obviously, there are going to be some hot ones, some average ones, and some, well, not-so-good-looking girls. I would have to say that I do see quite a few good-looking girls around. |

Yes, the girls are hot. But most of them are definitely not worth touching with a ten-foot pole. There do seem to be a lot of ‘sluts.’ For a good time on Thursday night, hang out a block from the bars. It is always funny to watch them freezing in their small skirts in January. |

Social Scene
Making new friends at NIU is not hard, although keeping them can prove to be a challenge. There is a fairly active social scene for a college in a Midwestern farm town. No matter the night, you will always be able to find people out and about— be it at bars, the Huskie Den, or organizational functions. The dorms, by their very nature and setup, force social interaction with all different types of people.
Hookups or Relationships?
As with any college campus, hookups are a fairly common occurrence. Usually, both parties understand that such couplings don't mean anything. Still, perhaps too many freshman girls have been taking the walk of shame lately. It's important to pace yourself early, or you might end up having a bunch of experiences you will come to regret, with a bunch of people you would never have touched in high school. After freshman and sophomore year, it seems like many students get the compulsion to hook up out of their system and seek out more meaningful, long-term relationships. However, there will always be skanks and manks (man skanks).
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
Surprisingly, finding a potential love interest online no longer bears the stigma it once did. Web sites like Facebook and MySpace are becoming hookup havens. Online match-making allows for searchers to look through hundreds of profiles to find people with similar interests or ridiculously unrealistic profile pictures. More conventionally, bars are the easiest places to scout for the opposite sex. The boozy atmosphere makes for a relaxed setting, and everyone usually makes the effort to look their best before a night on the town. Meeting someone in a class is dicey because you have no way of knowing if they are already attached to someone and there is the potential for a semester full of awkwardness if a hookup attempt doesn’t work out. The same goes for macking on people who live on your dorm floor. Your best bet may be to join a club and find someone with similar interests.
Dress Code
Anything goes when it comes to fashion at NIU. It is most definitely not a preppy school, although there are the requisite Abercrombie devotees. Students wear just about anything to class, no matter the occasion or season. Many end up wearing pajamas to class because they simply don't care or don't have the time in the morning. Business majors are generally the best dressed, even wearing suits to class, but during the day, most students dress casually in jeans. At night, of course, this all changes, as many strive to make the best impression possible. The guys clean up nicely, and the girls spend far too much time picking out something to wear. Vintage clothing is particularly popular, so it might be wise to head to a Salvation Army or thrift store and buy something old that doesn't smell.
