Advice on Finding a Job/Internship NIU really bends over backwards in helping its students find employment and internships. It’s a good thing too because you are entering a real world that has become increasingly flooded with college graduates. Employers are considering applicants from any number of schools with better academic reputations. However, the Career Services office serves as a fantastic equalizer, offering several services to help students. Be proactive in seeking out opportunities and guidance. As soon as you find yourself settled on campus, make an appointment with a Career Services counselor. They are in a position to help you plan an educational experience that dovetails nicely with your career ambitions. Acquiring internships during your summers off is of critical importance and will play a key role in making you attractive to prospective employers. When senior year roles around, start applying for jobs as soon as possible. Attend career and internship fairs even if you aren’t interested in the attendees because the experience of preparing is invaluable and will better prepare you for a job hunt.
