College Prowler Take
If you can’t find your way around the NIU campus and DeKalb, your legs are probably broken. There are so many options and the campus is so accessible that you have no excuse to be late for anything. The Huskie Bus Line is a fantastic resource for students and will take them anywhere on campus and to most hot spots in DeKalb and Sycamore. You don’t need even need to pay to utilize them. There are several buses and routes, and drivers do a good job of reaching destinations on time without incident. The buses can get overcrowded in the winter, but the University is usually proactive in adding more buses and routes when necessary. Walking to class remains the best option, with dorms and apartments usually being within 15 minutes walking distance of most campus buildings. In addition, many students enjoy biking to class.
Cabs are hard to find, but not needed thanks to the Late Nite Ride Service, which is free and will take you just about anywhere in DeKalb. A trip to the airport means an expensive cab ride or long drive, but how many students really take trips there on a regular basis anyway? The only problem with transportation in DeKalb is how hard it is to reach Chicago if you don’t have your own car. The closest Metra and Amtrak stations are far away and inconvenient.

The bus system is awesome and probably one of the best things about NIU. It runs pretty regularly and goes to everywhere you need to go. |

I can’t ever recall seeing a taxi in DeKalb. You’d have to call for one special, I think. Not that it’s really necessary, because you can always find a friend or grab a bus. |

Bring a car to campus if you can afford it. It really makes life easier. Depending on friends or a bus to get places is a major drag and gets old fast. |

Two words: Drunk Bus. It’s a lifesaver after a night out in DeKalb. It will basically take you anywhere you need to go for no charge. That’s really cool. Wait times can take a while, though. |

The buses are usually on time and are consistent, but at times they get out of whack and are extremely crowded in subpar weather. |
