Small Town on the Lake

Ashland is a very small town, so there isn't too much to do as far as nightlife goes, but it's a friendly, comfortable place. The scenery, here at the edge of Lake Superior, is amazing. Skiing and snowmobiling are common activities, as well as snowshoeing. In the fall and spring people go canoeing and kayaking. Northland holds a folk festival for a weekend in May that is attended by members of the community.

Just Great Overall

Because Northland is an environmental liberal arts school, it offers some great majors and minors for people interested in the outdoors, such as Outdoor Education, Ecological Restoration, Fisheries Ecology and Management, and Natural Resources. It also offers a Native American Studies major, and a major in Sustainable Community Development.

The professors here are amazing. They really care about their work and their students and they are very available.

Very Far North

Northland College is right on the edge of Lake Superior. It gets very cold here, and in winter the snow is fairly heavy. We do have the advantage of being close enough to the lake that lake effect snow goes over us and so we get less than neighboring areas. Snow days only happen if the wind is really bad or if it gets far into the negative temperatures. In fall and spring, however, the campus is absolutely beautiful, and the proximity to the lake keeps temperatures a little warmer in both seasons.
