Evanston Is Nice, I Guess – Evanston as a whole is really nice and there are lots of places to chop and eat. It is a nice town, but there seems to be tension with its identity as a college town and a quaint family town. I don't think those two are necessarily opposite, but at times there is tension.

They're Awesome! I really think that NU sports are great! Football and basketball games are so much fun to attend, and our women's lacrosse team are super champions!

The Lots Are Far Away. Most of the lots are pretty far away from things, and if you leave your car too long somewhere, they will be quick to ticket you.

Stuck up Townies – Evanston likes to maintain some high moral codes. The locals tend to complain about noise and "rude" students more than traditional school areas.

Mechanical Engineering Is Competitive – The engineering program is notorious. The pre requisites can be frustrating because the school uses them as a weed out tool that I think is unfair to freshmen. But they are right that if you can survive the first few quarters you'll be ok. Just being from Northwestern will get you opportunities and engineers are always in demand.

Depends on the Teacher – The school is tough and definitely has a high academic standard. However, I wish the courses were more standardized and less open to teacher interpretation. Its amazing how teachers teach the same class so differently and equally capable students suffer.

Pretty Tolerant – The RA's are pretty tolerant and helpful. The campus police are pretty nice and lenient too. Overall, I'd say Northwestern has a pretty lenient atmosphere.

Shuttles Are Great – There's a shuttle that can take you from Northwestern's medical school in downtown Chicago to the undergraduate campus in Evanston. It's really convenient and comes about every hour. Everything on the undergraduate campus is in walking distance, but if you're in a hurry, there's a shuttle that comes every 10 or so minutes too.

Never Bored – The facilities, overall, are great. I have no complaints. I wish the main library was more aesthetically pleasing. Nonetheless, it's a great place to work, and I go there often to study. The athletic center, SPAC, is also really great. I love running, while getting a good view of the lake.

Great Academic Programs – The reason I chose Northwestern and why I am staying is the academics. I love the flexible curriculum and great and caring professors. The quarter system is tough but allows me to learn so much in a year.

The first three weeks of school, campus dining was great. But it gets really repetitive. As a sophomore, I'm getting off the meal plan. I prefer eating off campus or in the sorority.

It's really competitive, but when you get a good grade... it feels spectacular!

Great College – I have totally loved my first year at Northwestern, and I can say without any doubt that I have made the perfect choice by coming here. There is so much to do both on and off campus! The people here are really nice as well; they are very diverse and you can easily fit into any community.

Plenty of computers are available in the library. Some locations could use more + printers, but it's okay.

Classes are very good, particularly once you get higher level and classes are smaller and harder.

Some departments are certainly better than others (I switched from PoliSci major to History because the department is SO much stronger), but in general the academics are excellent. Teachers tend to push students hard, but in a manageable way.

Somewhat snowy winter, but certainly manageable. Generally beautiful.

NU has three L stops on campus, all of which are very accessible. Though Chicago is only 12 miles away, this train can take quite a while to get downtown. There is also a good bus system and the Metra.

Northwestern is an excellent school. Many students initially have trouble adjusting (as with any college transition), perhaps heightened by the extremely prevalent Greek system. However, I love the outstanding academics, active and passionate student body, campus & location. I can't wait to go back.

Guys & Girls:
Some Standouts in a Sea of Sameness – I have had the good fortune to meet a few incredibly sweet and good-looking guys, but none are without their shortcomings. And, for the most part, as I look around I am not overwhelmingly impressed with what I see. I am not tempted by the view of sweatpants and backpacks.

Pretty Good, Considering – There has been a large uproar and a lot of complaining about the state of diversity at our school this year. Some insensitive incidents have occurred. However, if you look at the numbers, it's hard to deny that minorities are well-represented, comprising almost 50% of the student body. I lived in Interfaith Hall last year, a dorm space specifically meant to mix students of different religious backgrounds. There are also many campus organizations dedicated to celebrating different ethnic backgrounds. I think, if there seems to be segregation on campus, most of it is self-inflicted. I think it's important to look at both sides of racism and reverse-racism, and most of all, to realize that in all fairness and with tempers moderated Northwestern is a decently racially diverse school. My biggest complaint is actually with the lack of economic diversity. Most of the students that go here, even international students, are very well off and do not need financial aid (international students are not granted any by the school). Worse, most students do not realize in this rich North Shore environment that not everyone is as wealthy as they are and this can cause a lot of insensitivity to low-income students' difficulties.

Playing Favorites – As a science major, a lot of my world revolves around funding. and it is clear what majors the university favors based on the income the respective departments pull in. Just this year the got rid of 2 biology concentrations (evolutionary biology being one of them) As a biology major I feel like I and a lot of other science majors take a back seat to chemistry and materials science.

Shuttles Are Unpredictable – Its hard to get around campus considering the only road surrounds the campus and the busses do not penetrate the campus in a way that enables efficient movement within the campus. The shuttles are great for going downtown though, but they do get crowded. a lot of graduates commute on them so you aren't supposed to use them just to get from one side of campus to the other......which is annoying.
College Junior 2012-07-23T03:29:49Z
Drinking Is More Popular – There are certain people and certain groups known to partake in marijuana and other drugs but for the most part people don't.
College Junior 2012-07-23T03:28:47Z
Not a Good Value – We are forced to be on a meal plan if we stay on campus yet the options for the plans are limited. Even in my dorm where I have a cafe on the first floor and my own kitchen which I could use to cook healthy and cheaper meals I am forced to use my 13 meals a week at a place where portions are not up to your control and foods are generally unhealthy.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
