Choose Wisely.. there is a HUGE divide between greek and non-greek at NU. greeks are generally thought of as entitled, preppy, and in their own little world. non-greeks are thought of as more hardworking/nerdy, less concerned with appearances, and more interested hanging out than hooking up. the real question is: how much do you wanna pay for friends??

One Extreme or the Other – Either you are a freshman and go to frat parties where you know pretty much no one or you are an upperclassman and throw house parties where you know everyone. There aren't many good places to mingle and meet people in a casual setting.

Student Groups – As far as big universities go, Northwestern is one of the more diverse, which makes it easy to join campus groups that tend to your interests.

Not Really – I know very few people who do any drugs at all, and the ones who do usually just smoke. Nothing too serious.

Evanston Restaurants – There are tons of restaurants within walking distance of Northwestern--you can find pretty much any type food you could possibly want.

Financially Fair – I received a fair amount of financial aid, mainly need-based and partially merit-based. The school has an admirable endowment and can be generous with its financial aid. The usual FASFA documents are accepted and critical to securing aid. I come from a single-parent family so the financial committee considers all elements of one's background and devises an expected family contribution based on reasonable research and conclusions. If unsatisfied with the schools conclusions or methods, one can appeal the results.

Housing Diversity – Evanston has a reputation of having neighborhood safety hazards, especially near the EL train and of course after dark. It is important to feel safe in an apartment and proximity to campus is crucial, especially during the grueling winter months. Most places are in walking distance to school, and costs vary widely. Housing in downtown Evanston offers more amenities (especially in the updated luxury condos) and proximity to restaurants, etc. But living up north provides a more neighborhood environment.

Limited computer use, only in certain sections of the library (and small area in Norris). It costs to print and although it is inexpensive, it adds up and can be very inconvenient, especially during midterms and finals. Not necessary to have personal printer, but it helps to have a friend who does. Wireless connections range between buildings, but NUIT (tech support) is always available to help with computer issues.

In the two years I've received Financial Aid from Northwestern, I've been offered a helpful amount, as the school is very expensive to attend. But, it's great that the folks in the financial office realize the out-of-this-world sticker price on attending the university and offer fair financial aid.

Evanston Freeze – IT'S COLD--the most bone-numbing chill one could possibly ever experience in his or her entire lifetime (aside from living in Antarctica). Winds like I've never felt slapping me in the face as I attempt to trek to classes that feel miles upon miles away even if they're just across the way from my dorm, simply because of the added shin-level layers of snow, sleet, and ever present rain I have to endure.

The main athletic facility on campus, SPAC (Sports Pavilion and Activites Center) is a wonderful and quite exceptional exercise facility on campus. The view of Lake Michigan on the second level of the center (where I spend the majority of my time) is spectacular. I also appreciate the number of machines available for use as I've never had to "wait for an open treadmill" or feel pressured to rush my work-out to allow others to use the machine. Exercising is a big part of the student life at my school, so it's nice that we have a great facility to combat the extra pounds usually associated with the stressful and hectic academic environment long days of classes create. Also, not too far from the lake and the meeting spot for students all over campus thanks to it's mid-campus location, Norris University Center, our student center offers a buffet of choices in the way of snacking options, lunch and quick dinners. With a food court style feel Norris has a grill, yummy salad bar, stir-fry, made-to-order sandwiches and Mexican. All in all I'm satisfied with the facilites I frequent on campus.

Evanston has everything to offer to for a great college experience. It's got just the right amount of entertainment and dining for a college not too far from Chicago.

The financial aid isn't very negotiable. I was given a package and it's still very difficult for me to afford school and I've had to take out massive personal loans and the school won't really do anything to help me out.

Close Proximity – Northwestern is located within Evanston and everything is fairly close to everything else. It's not hugely sprawling or spread out like some other campuses. This allows for students to interact with each other more and gives the campus a nice 'homey' feel.

Downtown Evanston – There are a number of places I eat at south of campus in downtown Evanston. Whenever I go out to eat I always head south of campus where I can find convenience at a number of fast food places, Burger King, is famous around here for being open 24/7 and is probably your only option at 4am. There are also nicer sit down places, Giordano's is a great pizza place and gives a student discount. There's several other larger chains which have decent prices and usually give a student discount and then there are a few places unique to Evanston. Clark's is a good example which is conveniently located on Clark street just south of campus and you can get pretty good food at cheap prices and they have a great variety.

Being a private school, NU is costing me a fortune. Hopefully I will get a great, well paying job straight out of college as many NU alum have in order to pay it all off!

Guys & Girls:
Outgoing Nerds – Although NU is known as a school with having many "unattractive nerds", Northwestern aka Nerdwestern in my experience is filled with very brainy students who are in general extremely down-to-earth. We might not be the best looking, average for the most part, but there are some hotties here and there. NU's social life is very greek- 36% and so many students are very outgoing and social and parties are fun without being too crazy.

Perfect by My Standards! Although it is definitely necessary for all students to bring their own computers for class and convenience purposes, there is wireless all over campus and basically everywhere outdoors, which is wonderful. The library has many computers for easy use if ever needed. In this day and age though, I think it's very common and acceptable that computers are a necessity, which is why I give NU an A-.

Not So Much – There are a lot of international students and students from different backgrounds.

Expensive and Crappy – There are a lot of apartments, but they're old and not very nice for a lot of money.

Fun With Nerds and Libraries – There's lots of studying, but it's fun to hang out with friends, especially outside when the weather is nice.

You Don't Need to Be 21 – Northwestern's party scene is basically based around the frat parties. There's the local bar that's near campus that is basically a Monday night traditions. I say if you wanna have a good time, just party at your friends' apartments.

Good School, Know What You're Looking for – Northwestern is great academically. Classes are what you'd expect for a school of its caliber, though most large lecture classes must be self-taught. The students themselves are incredibly intelligent and well-rounded. However, there is a divide on campus between the Greek-centric, athletic North and the eccentric, liberal South.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
