Great campus shuttles and city bus service. All of campus is served by mutliple 'El' stations along the purple line. Saferide is available all the time.

Northwestern parties like the yuppie Sperry-wearing North Shore school that it is. Great transit with on campus shuttles and saferides. There are lots of bars in Evanston but they're of the craft-brew/gastropub variety, unless you want to party with Evanston high schoolers at The Keg.

Evanston has stuff to do and is very close to Chicago, which has everything to do.

I received enough financial aid to be able to attend, but not enough that it's not a big burden on my family.

Football tix are free which is hard to beat at a Big 10 school. That said, our team could use a little more oomph every once in a while.

Medill is tough, but even as a sophomore, I feel like I already have many of the skills necessary to be successful.

Parties are great, and you don't need to pay a lot of money to take taxis to bars to have a good time.

My classes are great, and my professors are very knowledgeable.

NU's social life lives and dies by it's Greek life. Some people don't like partying and that's fine, but if you do like drinking, you're gonna have to go Greek.
College Sophomore 2013-06-19T17:14:33Z
You're at Northwestern so you care about your future. People smoke/drink/party more than you'd expect but everyone's still responsible enough to know when they have to study.
College Sophomore 2013-06-19T17:09:48Z
It's much more diverse than a lot of other schools. Even the people who are similar racially/ethnically/religiously are different personally. There are a lot of rich people though.
College Sophomore 2013-06-19T17:07:44Z
Shuttles are great, they're free, but most of the campus is walking distance.

There's only really two sports at college that anybody really cares about: basketball and football. NU's football team is up and coming and the basketball team is alright, but we have the worst fans in the Big 10. Welsh-Ryan is a s****y arena and the student section can't see the scoreboard at Ryan field, but there's something about being the underdog that makes winning much more special when it happens.

As an engineer who likes designing and building things, DTC (look it up) is worth the price of admission for me. Ford is an incredible building and really useful. I have learned a lot this year. I think NU is great for engineers and journalism majors but for everything else you probably can get the same amount of education at Michigan for less money.

NU's administration is very anti-Greek. Two fraternities were kicked off before my freshman year and almost every fraternity feels like they can be kicked off next if they fuck up (except SAE, they're not getting kicked off because they're headquarters are in Evanston). The only time Evanston/NU was cool was for Dillo Day. However, you can drink/vape in the dorms if you're not obnoxious about it. Most CAs (NU's version of RAs) don't want to get you in trouble. From personal experience, my floor's hallway smelled like weed a lot of the year and the worst that ever happened was an email saying "Remember, weed is illegal." You can definitely still have fun here. In fact, it's kinda hard not to get f***ed up semi-regularly if you live in Elder or Bobb.

Northwestern is hard. I have never been challenged this much academically in my life even though I went to one of the better public schools in the nation. I've still managed to keep safely above a 3.0 GPA but it's a lot of work. I'm an engineer though so our school work is harder than a lot of other students. However, I learned a ton. I seriously doubt that students at other non-top tier schools learn nearly as much as we do. It sounds cliche, but NU actually is preparing me for a successful career. EECS professors suck though. I wouldn't recommend being a comp sci major here unless you have a lot of prior experience.

Evanston is a great place to get something to eat. However, it's only really an option if you live down south. If you live north, it takes a lot more effort to go anywhere south of Noyes.

It is very prevalent and not very cliquey. People have lots of friends in different chapters and who are non-greek. Also, the sorority houses are all really nice, although the frats are kind of run down. Most people on campus have a good view of the Greek system.

We are mostly a walking campus, not many people commute.

NU paid for most of my schooling from a need-based scholarship, which helped a lot.

Football isn't great, but the games are fun. Lacrosse is the way to go.

There are many cultural groups, but not very many economic groups.

The shuttles are late often and sometimes they don't coincide well with the regular class schedules. However, they always have extra shuttles running in the winter and during bad weather. Northwestern also has Saferide, which is a free service that you can call and they'll have a car pick you up to your destination to increase safety.
College Junior 2013-05-26T22:52:36Z
There are a lot of people who do drugs, but it is easy to not be around this scene if you choose not to. It's all about personal preference. You choose which scene to enter. Even though drinking is popular on campus, it is easy to find other activities to do and friends who don't drink.
College Junior 2013-05-25T21:33:58Z
The security guards are pretty strict about checking people into the dorms, but otherwise, most security is pretty lax.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
