The bar/club scene at Evanston isn't very good for those under 21 since all of the bars/clubs are for 21 and up. However, the only club in downtown Evanston, The Keg, got closed down again so now there's even less to do nightlife-wise. Frat parties or off campus parties can be fun, but this year a lot of the frats were put on probation so the frat party scene hasn't been very good lately and it's mostly for freshmen. Transportation to nightlife can be rough in the winter because of the cold and snow. Your best bet to get transportation/entrance into a club would be to attend formals since you'll be transported to a nice venue in Chicago.

It's in the Midwest, so the weather isn't great. I like to describe the weather as bipolar, it can go from 70s and sunny one day to cold and rainy the next. You never know what kind of weather you are going to get. There is winter and it does get cold, snowy and windy. The summer is generally 70s and 80s with many sunny days.

There are a lot of new buildings on campus and there has been a lot more construction to improve on the inside of the older buildings. The best part of Northwestern for science students and even those in social sciences is that NU is a huge research institution with labs in very diverse fields. I would highly recommend taking advantage of this and try to work in a lab or with a professor to get more practical, real life experience.

The dorms at Northwestern are pretty decent. They try to encourage students to be social with other residents including dorm or floor sponsored events. I also had good RAs in my dorm.

Northwestern is a very diverse school. I truly believe that this university prides itself on selecting top applicants from all over the world, and I've met so many amazing, diverse students during my time here thus far. While there is inevitably some racism on campus, it is not as big of a problem compared to less diverse, less accepting schools. Northwestern really emphasizes acceptance and community, so I feel as if everyone is fairly united here.

Evanston has amazing food and a wide variety of options. Although some places are pricey, it's very easy to find "fast" food that is college-budget friendly. There are many to-go options which is very appealing to the student on the run. Many restaurants also have what is known as the "wildcard discount"; students can present their ID and receive 10% off meals. It's great!

It's very easy to declare your major once you enroll at Northwestern. In fact, it's also relatively easy to change majors or even schools once you are enrolled. This makes students feel much more at ease given that they can change their mind more than once during their college experience. Because everyone at Northwestern is a highly qualified student, the faculty make it simple to change majors or schools.

In order to park at Northwestern, it's pretty imperative to pay for a spot in a parking garage. Students can only park on campus after 4 PM and on weekends unless they have a permit so it can be tricky to find a spot. I definitely recommend paying a monthly fee for a spot unless you want to drive around looking for street parking.

Northwestern is located in the heart of downtown Evanston and is just a quick ride away from downtown Chicago. There is always something cool to see or fun to do by hanging around town or simply taking a train to the city. The dining in Evanston is fantastic, and it's fun to shop around given the variety of boutiques and fun, trendy stores.

Northwestern gives need-based aid, so if the amount they calculate they should give doesn't quite cut it, then it's pretty much just "tough".

Greek organizations are pretty popular, but if you aren't familiar with people in a certain group, it's tough to find a way to socialize in a greek setting.

Near Chicago but far enough away to make it not busy or congested.

Midwest extremes combined with the lake effect from Lake Michigan. Loads of snow but gets very warm in the spring and summer as well. But pretty alright all things considered.

As a graduate student, I have no part in Greek life. But there's always something happening.

Big 10 team, but that also means we have tough competition.

Northwestern has decent facilities (Ryan Field, building new practice field for football, etc.), but athletic support is lacking. NU is a small school, especially for the Big 10, and though sporting events can be a fun distraction the focus is really on academics, especially since many of the teams here aren't particularly competitive within the division.

You have to have a certain gpa but they come in handy!
College Junior 2013-04-22T21:11:26Z
They just closed "The Keg" which was a great bar to go to, and the other bars are all downtown so we have to take cabs or buses. There are fraternity parties but the cops are strict so sometimes they get closed down.

Evanston is fantastic for food. It's like a mini chicago. Its a fun place because we have beaches also. There isn't too much nightlife though.
College Junior 2013-04-22T21:03:54Z
The dorms are average, nothing special. Some are gross, but some just got redone so they are nice. Sorority houses are beautiful. They all pretty much have good access to all the buildings. Science people usually live up north and theater people usually live south. If you want to be close to the fraternity quad, live north.

Northwestern is located in Evanston which is a smaller sized town that offers many attractions. These include prestigious restaurants, shopping stores, nice apartment buildings, walking distance for everything, great bars and fun places to hangout. I must admit, though, that NU's campus is a little more comfortable that Evanston at times, just because of the wide range of activities available and of course, the BEACH!! In the summer time, it's great to hangout at NU and then go to downtown Evanston for a nice meal and dessert.

Varsity sports at Northwestern include football, which we're among the Big 10, and actually, last year won the Gator Bowl!! Additionally, there is volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, golf, soccor, tennis, cross country, crew, and much more. Club sports are basically any sport you want to try out, so any of the ones listed above, in addition to swimming, beach sports, sailing, badminton, self-defense classes, yoga. The list is endless. Each year, we also have a school world-cup where soccor players whether on the team or not can compete for a FIFA-like prize! Perhaps the only limitation is not having other sports such as rock-climbing and bowling.

Northwestern University student life is impeccable. For one, there is a large greek life, around 60% are participants and they always have fun active ways to get students involved and charitable on campus. Additionally, there are over 200 students groups/clubs that students can get involved in and each quarter, we host an activities fair where students can sign up for events or clubs they are interested in. Furthermore, Northwestern is just in the heart of Evanston where there is petite bakeries, distinguished department stores, and of course, up scale bars and restaurants. With three big gym facilities, students can incessantly find ways to stay in shape with fitness classes, get a massage, play a sport or simply have fun chilling at the beach just outside our biggest gym. There are 2 studnt beaches bordering the east side of campus which makes for a great way to get out in the sun and get a good swim. Our campus student center, Norris, also houses all the student organizations, boasts of prestigious food, a whole floor just for all types of games, ice-skating rink in the winter, concerts, plays, and theatre performances. At Northwestern, you can always find something to do that will keep your spirits high and leave you stress-free!

The campus can be pretty strict about underage drinking, but it's really Evanston that the policies stem from.

On the science and engineering side the research here is amazing. Pre-med is difficult but a great program. Psychology research is also very present and respected. The theatre program here is unparalleled for BA programs. The school of music is highly respected, and it gives students the opportunity to double major. The alumni network (across the university) is wonderful. Internships and co-ops opportunities are numerous, and being so close to Chicago is convenient for work and for fun.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
