College Prowler Take
For many students coming from privileged backgrounds, NU is the epitome of diversity—hey, there’s lots of Asians, right? If you’re from a more racially-integrated, urban area, though, you realize the fairly homogenous character of the student body. Despite some disheartening acts in past years, people at NU are relatively accepting and open-minded about differences, real or perceived. Campus is fairly united, with most people being economically well-off and extremely well-educated. If you’re a minority, you may sometimes feel out of place, but there are lots of cultural clubs that thrive on campus. There is also a sense of intellectual curiosity among students that pushes many to seek knowledge about other cultures and ways of life. Unfortunately, the ignorance of some can overshadow the sophistication of many, as occasional, scattered hate crimes still occur. Although Northwestern stresses diversity and acceptance of one and all, there is unspoken tension that must be addressed more directly before the campus can be truly diverse.

Northwestern: a Melting Pot of Culture?
B
Northwestern is extremely diverse in nearly every area; however, NU has an EXTREME dearth of African-American students. Coming from a Memphis high school that was about half African-American, it was rather shocking to me that a first-rate institution like Northwestern had so few black students. Otherwise, it seems that Northwestern has a very diverse student body.
In terms of political beliefs, I would say that Northwestern is definitely liberal-leaning. Most people here are well-informed about politics and current events, and they are usually liberal.

If you're coming from a highly diverse neighborhood like Los Angeles (well parts of Los Angeles) diversity here is not amazing on the whole. The hispanic and latino population is rather small. Also, a lot of ethnic groups tend to stick together. It could be worse. Your perspective might differ depending on your dorm and program.

I think the squirrel population on campus is more diverse than our student body. Campus is primarily whites and Asians. It’s pitiful. |

Diversity....I Guess

Diversity sucks...haha..jk. But really there is a lot of diversity when it comes to political background and religion. There are a lot of people of Asian decent, and Northwestern likes to pride itself in that fact. But there are very few Black and Hispanic people here. We have only 140 something incoming Black freshman but there are at least 2000 in the 2013 freshman class. Stuff like that needs to change

There are a lot of different people of different races, ethnicities, majors, and interests, but these groups tend to segregate from one another, sadly.
