Racially, it's about 55% white. Then it's about 23% Asian, so some of the other minority groups may not seem as present. But I feel like it's a given that at one of the world's top universities people come from all over, literally. There are many Midwesterners but also many international students. I feel like actually our aspect of least diversity is socioeconomically, because both the suburb of Evanston and many students, due to the school's price tag, are pretty well-off. I'm a lower middle class student and I notice it.

Yes there are, northwestern is pretty accepting no matter where you come from.

Students from the South made up 11% of this year's freshman class... that was more than from New England! I haven't encountered a lot of people with southern accents but there are some, and there's no reason you wouldn't be welcomed.

I am from Texas and I know a bunch of other Texans that have gotten in, so the south is strongly represented.

Diversity is a touchy subject at Northwestern. Many people would be quick to talk about the large numbers of Asian and Indian students, most notably, the international students. Northwestern boasts a student body that hails from 30 countries and all 50 states, but the African American and Hispanic populations are noticeably smaller. For the most part, students are very accepting of the minority populations, whether they are racial, sexual, or economic. Northwestern does have a very steep tuition, but financial aid and other government grants allow for a student body that is very economically diverse. Unlike racial diversity, these differences are harder to spot, and everyone blends together from an outsider’s perspective. But for students in lower-income brackets, Northwestern students from other economic brackets can seem a bit spoiled. Hopefully, Northwestern will take measures to ease these tensions soon.

Minority social groups are very prominent on campus. The support groups range from the Multicultural Greek Council and ethnic a cappella groups to publications like NU Asian Magazine and BlackBoard Magazine. Other groups include Alianza (for Hispanic students), For Members Only (for black students), South Asian Student Alliance (SASA), African Students Association (ASA), and others. The multitude of multicultural student groups on campus provides good support to students who may feel lost in the shuffle.
