College Prowler Take

It’s a Greek world, and the rest of us are just living in it. About 35 percent of all students at Nu are in some Greek house, but the consoling part is that NU doesn’t necessarily have all the trappings of a traditional Greek system. There are fraternities and sororities known for partying, but there are also houses where the emphasis is on community and togetherness, not cattiness and testosterone.

Going Greek is a very personal choice. A lot of people you wouldn’t expect to go Greek will join a house, and others that you peg as partiers won’t. Some outsiders to the community quibble that it’s akin to buying your friends, but tensions between Greeks and non-Greeks are not an issue here. More likely than not, even if you choose to forgo rushing, you’ll have access to fraternity and sorority events—and all the parties you so desire to attend.

Ever since I came here, I've been...

Ever since I came here, I've been waiting for the social life to imrpove beyond local bars and immature frats. I've joined a reputable sorority, but many people can be pretentious and become easily threatened. Aesthetically, the campus is the epitome of a college campus, but the students can take away from the pleasantry associated with a fun and stimulating college experience.

The Greek scene is pretty big here, but it’s not out of control like it is at some state schools. Our Greek system is also a lot different; people who you wouldn’t expect to find in houses are.

There are still plenty of things...

There are still plenty of things to do without being a sorority/fraternity. It doesn’t dominate the social scene and is really expensive to be part of one. It depends what kind of person you are. If you are having trouble making friends or don’t really partake in many outside activities, joining a sorority or fraternity would probably be a great thing to do because it will give you an instant group of friends. However, it will also wipe clean your bank account.

I’m in the ‘alternative’ Greek scene (a non-IFC fraternity)I find that it’s a big part of my social life, but it doesn’t prevent me from doing other things.

I’m not in a sorority, so it’s hard for me to say. My friends in Greek houses enjoy it and they have lots of cool events, but I wouldn’t say Greek life dominates the social scene—at least not on South Campus.
