Social Scene
The social scene at NU is what you make of it. If you want to spend your time in the library, by all means, do. However, students looking for a crazy party scene will probably end up somewhat disappointed-Northwestern is not your average Big Ten school, after all. But you will find enough frat and off-campus parties to whet your appetite, and the bar scene is all right, definitely enhanced by a good pre-game. While NU students definitely aren't as anti-social as some schools believe, the party scene could afford to be more vibrant.
Hookups or Relationships?
Northwestern's social scene definitely lends itself more to drunken, random hookups than long-term commitments, but being located in the middle of the "dining capital of the North Shore" does provide for some nice dates. And don't forget that Chicago is just a 45-minute "El" ride away. As far as the dating scene, it's probably geared more toward hookups than relationships, since NU students are overcommitted as is, but there are plenty of relationships that have been going strong for quite some time.
Dress Code
Style at NU varies a great deal across the board. You'll see students in their pajamas and sweats, as well as people in their Sunday best, preps, hipsters, and everything in between. Most dress pretty laid-back, though, with your usual helping of Gap and Urban Outfitters. All style is pointless come winter, though, as everyone opts for their heaviest North Face winter coats.
