Want to get an apartment around Notre Dame? Let’s just say that’s probably not the best idea for your wallet. The cost of living in Maryland is high, especially in the area surrounding the campus. Many people who aren’t natives to Baltimore usually have the perception that the entire city is run-down and full of violence. Though that may be true in some places, there are also a lot of nicer regions, as well. The area around Notre Dame is one of those nicer areas, so naturally your rent will be higher if you want to live close to the school. It isn’t too hard to find housing off campus, but finding something within a decent price range will be a challenge.
On the other hand, living on campus isn’t much better as far as prices go. In fact, it may cost even more than living off campus with a few roommates in a house. Despite this fact, students coming from out of state will usually grit their teeth and bear the cost. It’s easier being on campus and taking out a loan to pay for your cost of living when you’re in an unfamiliar area than trying to come up with monthly payments for rent. A lot of students are commuters, too, so they can just live with their parents or may already have a permanent residence nearby.
