Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At Oakland University, the professors take the time to get to know their students. This is because at Oakland University, class sizes remain on the smaller side. Writing classes often remain under 25 students; however, classes that are more lecture-based can reach more than 100 students. In the larger classes, you can still make sure your professor knows who you are by taking advantage of office hours. Each professor has his or her own style of interacting with the students. Some professors are more quiet and reserved, while others give out their home phone numbers in case a student has a last-minute question for a test or paper.

Grading is based on a 4.0 GPA scale. For some classes, you may be required to get a 2.0 or higher to pass. Workload varies depending on the class level and subject matter. For English classes at the 200 level, you will read literature from Shakespeare, Milton, and Wordsworth, to name a few. For each of these, a deep analysis of the work is required on tests and sometimes papers. Note that not every professor fits into the learning style that you require; it is up to you to figure out what you need to succeed. To give you a hand in figuring out your future, there are many advisers to help you decide what classes to take, what major you may like most, and what career to follow. Oakland University's reputation is certainly justifiable. Its programs are expanding and growing to accommodate the needs of every student. Recently, Oakland partnered with Beaumont Hospital to create a medical school at Oakland. Oakland University is right to pride itself in its academic achievements.

Profs Understand Outside Pressures

As a student of the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, I am like many others in the program. We are generally non-traditional students with spouses, children and other commitements. While this program is very difficult and demanding, the professors do understand what we are dealing with.

Academics are very good. They make studying easy and helpful. There are always study groups to help you. In the library they also have free tutors.

Online Courses

If you would rather have more flexibility by learning on your computer rather than in a classroom setting, Oakland University offers many online classes to fit your needs. All online classes at Oakland University are accessed through a system called Moodle. Moodle allows your professor to create courses that give you access to the syllabus, course material, assignments, quizzes, self-tests, and hyperlinks to websites and student webpages. A discussion board allows students to still interact with one another as they would in a regular class. Even though an online class requires much self-discipline, each course has different requirements. Some have a set number of on-campus meetings while others require regular synchronized chat sessions. If this all sounds like what you are looking for, then you have the choice of fully enrolling in online courses.

Did You Know? Oakland University has everything you need whether you know what you want to major in or not. Oakland University has 134 baccalaureate degree programs.
