Matilda Dodge Wilson, the founder of Oakland University, declared that there was to never be a football team because it was too violent. And so, in the absence of a football team, basketball became the main sport on campus. Traditions like tailgating are practiced before basketball games instead of the traditional football game. March Madness is one of the biggest events each year. If Oakland's game ends up in another state, a limited number of seats on buses are available for students.

Most Oakland University students agree that sports are important, and the quality of facilities shows that—for both athletes and non-athletes alike. With a state-of-the-art workout facility and free workout classes, students can use equipment at no cost. And for people who want to be athletes but are not selected for a team, intramural sports are an alternative option. Anyone can sign up for a small fee, and there will be regular competitions during the year. Whether you are looking to be in the cheering section or actually want to participate in a sport, Oakland can accommodate your desires.
