College Prowler Take

Most Oberlin students agree: athletics on campus are not of very much interest to anyone except to those who actively participate in them. The truth is, it’s just not a jock school in any way, shape, or form. In fact, Oberlin jocks (some would go so far as to say that’s an oxymoron in itself) tend to stick to themselves, much in the same way Conservatory students do. The most popular sport of all is ultimate Frisbee, and most ultimate stars tend to be sinewy and gangly-limbed, not ripped and beefy. If that isn’t a sign in itself as to the status of varsity sports on campus, then what is?

No matter how apathetic Oberlin students are towards their own sports teams, athletes do have access to some excellent facilities, and can choose from a wide range of competitive sports teams. For those who aren’t quite as hardcore about varsity sports, IM sports are also quite popular, and have their own followings. Because Oberlin is a liberal arts college, the focus is largely placed on education over athletics. Oberlin is not a place where athletes come to groom their talents in preparation for professional success. For that, athletes go to Ohio State. But if you are the local high school star, there are plenty of IM opportunities, as well as facilities for you to stay in shape and have some level of competition.

I know for a fact we have a football team, and a soccer team, but beyond that, IM sports are more popular.

IM sports are fun; my softball team almost won the IM series. It was a sad day when not enough people showed, and we had to forfeit. Varsity sports are big enough that you can probably find the sport you want to play, but you also won’t win much, most likely. Unless you join Frisbee, man, we rock at that. And football won like three games last year or something. It’s got to be a record.

I really wouldn’t know. I’ve only been to an ultimate Frisbee game, and that’s a club sport.

There are many laughable varsity sports on campus, but also many students inexplicably dedicated to them. Many IM sports, like soccer and basketball, have large dedicated followings and are quite popular. Badminton is a sport on the grow at Oberlin, and any student interested in badminton would do well to come to Oberlin to enrich the already vital badminton community that exists there.

Gyms and Facilities

  • Hales Auditorium - Hales Gymnasium is a separate facility from the main Philips Complex located just down Woodland Street. It contains a six-lane bowling alley, a billiards hall, and basketball court, which is home to many club and Exco classes, intramurals, and other events. It is also home to the Cat in the Cream (a student coffeehouse), a practice space, and offices for the Conservatory of Music’s jazz program.
  • Jesse Philips Education Center - The Jesse Philips Physical Education Center is a 115,000-square-foot facility. Its gyms are used for basketball, volleyball, intramural, and other recreational activities. Other facilities in Philips include the Robert Carr Pool, climbing wall, weight rooms containing Hammer Strength, BFS, universal weight training machines, free weights, and six racquetball and eight squash courts, two of which are set up for table tennis, and one for indoor golf.
  • John W. Heisman Club Field House - The John W. Heisman Field House is located in the far west end of the Philips complex. It includes an indoor track with six 200-meter lanes, and four standard-sized indoor tennis courts.

Getting Tickets

Tickets are free and easy to obtain; Oberlin athletes are lucky to have the spectators that they do—charging the admission would be altogether wishful thinking!

Most Popular Sports

Hands down, ultimate Frisbee draws the largest crowds. Next is women’s rugby and men’s soccer. IM sports are quite popular, especially when, for example, the south Asian students team is up against the Japanese students, and national rivalries spice up the game.

Most Overlooked Teams

The men’s lacrosse team doesn’t get nearly the press it deserves. Also, there is a desperate need to revive the ice hockey teams—if enough students take it up again, this sport could be the most popular winter event on campus.
